Friars Defeated In BIG EAST Opener At Seton Hall, 51-40

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Providence College women's basketball team opened BIG EAST play with a 51-40 loss at Seton Hall on Dec. 21 in South Orange, N.J. Grace Efosa paced the Friars with 20 points. The Friars evened their record at 7-7 overall and opened the conference slate 0-1. Seton Hall improved to 9-3 (1-0 BIG EAST).
 
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence got out to a 5-0 lead before Seton Hall went on a 13-0 run to claim a 13-5 lead with 2:06 remaining.
• Efosa scored seven-straight points for Providence to close the quarter and get the Friars within one at the break (13-12).
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Efosa kept her foot on the gas pedal to start the second quarter, scoring her ninth-straight point to give Providence a 14-13 lead at the 9:26 mark.
• The Friars went scoreless for the next 5:07 heading into the media timeout as Seton Hall regained a 15-14 lead (4:21).
Marta Morales Romero got the Friars back on the board with a lay-up on their first possession out of the timeout.
• The Friars closed out the quarter with a 5-1 scoring advantage to take a 21-18 lead into halftime.
• Providence's defense held the Pirates scoreless in the final 2:12 of the frame.
• Efosa paced all scorers in the first half with 11 points on 5-7 shooting and Olivia Olsen led the way on the glass with eight rebounds.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• The Friars took a 26-23 lead into the media timeout (4:48) as Efosa scored all five points for PC to start the quarter.
• Providence fell into a scoring drought spanning 4:46, while the Pirates finished the quarter on a 6-0 run.
• Seton Hall took a 29-27 lead into the final quarter after outscoring Providence 11-6 in the third.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Seton Hall used an 11-0 run during a five minutes span late in the fourth to take a 49-37 lead.
• Morales Romero hit a three with 33-seconds left, marking the Friars' only points in the last 5:32 of the game.
• Seton Hall outscored Providence 22-13 in the fourth quarter to claim a 51-40 win.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Efosa recorded her fifth 20+ point game of the season (20 points) on 9-17 shooting.
• Five other Friars cracked the scoring column, but none of those five players scored more than five points.
• Olsen paced Providence on the boards with 13 rebounds.
• The Friars committed a season-high 30 turnovers in the game.
• Seton Hall outscored Providence 16-5 in points off turnovers.
• Only three players cracked the scoring column for Seton Hall in the game. 
• Jada Eads led all scorers with 25 points, followed by Faith Masonius (18 points) and Kaydan Lawson (8 points).
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 29 against No. 4/5 UConn. The game will be played at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. and is scheduled to tip-off at 1:30 p.m. on SNY.
