Friars Defeated At No. 7/7 Connecticut, 67-41

HARTFORD, CONN. – The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by No. 7/7 Connecticut, 67-41, on Dec. 29 at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. Providence dipped to 7-8 overall (0-2 BIG EAST), while the Huskies improved to 11-2 (2-0 BIG EAST).
1ST QUARTER:
• A 15-0 run during a span of 3:22 gave UConn a 17-2 lead midway through the first quarter.
• Emily Archibald halted the Huskies' scoring run with a lay-up at the 4:44 mark.
• The Huskies extended their run to 22-2 to claim a 24-4 lead with 3:53 on the clock.
• Paige Bueckers scored 14 of UConn's 28 points in the first quarter as the Huskies mounted a 28-6 lead.
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence started the second quarter on a 7-0 run to get within 28-13 with 7:43 to play.
• UConn outscored Providence 17-6 the remainder of the quarter to take a 45-19 lead at halftime.
• Archibald paced the Friars in scoring during the first half with seven points on 3-3 shooting from the field.
• Bueckers went into the locker room with 19 points at the half.
• Turnovers (18) were a contributing factor to the Friars' deficit. The Huskies benefited with a 24-7 scoring edge in points off turnovers.
3RD QUARTER:
• The Friars outscored the Huskies 12-2 through the first 8:04 of the third (47-31).
• UConn responded with a 9-0 run in the final two minutes to take a 56-31 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
• Providence outscored UConn 12-11 overall in the quarter and Grace Efosa was responsible for seven points
4TH QUARTER:
• UConn outscored Providence 11-10 in the final quarter to take a 67-41 victory.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Efosa paced the Friars with 11 points and added seven rebounds. She was 7-7 from the free-throw line.
• Olivia Olsen recorded double-digit rebounds for the third-straight game, with 11. She added eight points and one assist.
• Archibald added nine points and three rebounds.
• Bueckers led all scorers with 23 points for UConn and Sarah Strong netted 14 points.
• The Friars out-rebounded the Huskies, 37-27.
• Providence finished the game with a season-high 31 turnovers and UConn posted a 40-11 advantage in points off of turnovers.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 1 against St. John's. It marks the BIG EAST home opener for the Friars. The game will be played at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to tip-off at 2:00 p.m.
