Friars Finish Non-Conference Play With 62-44 Win Over Merrimack

Olivia Olsen recorded her fourth double-double of the season on 16 points and 11 rebounds.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Merrimack, 62-44, on Dec. 14 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars concluded non-conference play with a 7-6 record, while Merrimack moved to 4-4. Olivia Olsen recorded her team-best fourth double-double of the season on 16 points and 11 rebounds.
 
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars used a 7-0 run during a span of 2:53 to take a 9-6 lead into the media timeout (4:47).
• Providence fell into a three-minute scoring drought before Marta Morales Romero hit a triple with 2:58 on the clock (12-8).
• The Friars led 16-13 at the break.
• Morales Romero and MacKayla Scarlett each scored five points in the first quarter.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• The Friars started the second quarter on a 6-0 run, forcing a Merrimack timeout with 7:49 on the clock (22-23).
Brynn Farrell extended the Friars' run to 9-0 with a baseline three at the 6:27 mark (25-13).
• Merrimack outscored Providence 12-4 over the final 5:57 to get within four at halftime (29-25).
• Olsen paced the Friars in the first half with eight points, five rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence regained its double-digit lead with an 10-2 start to the third quarter (39-27).
• The Friars pushed out to a 45-29 advantage heading into the media timeout (4:21).
• Providence outscored Merrimack 23-9 in the third overall to take a 52-34 lead at the break.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• The Friars maintained a comfortable lead throughout the fourth quarter to win the game 62-44. 
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Olsen finished the game with her fourth double-double of the season, and 20th of her career, on 16 points and 11 rebounds. She also added four blocks and four steals.
• Scarlett tied her season high in scoring with 11 points.
• Farrell rounded out the list of double-digit scorers with 10 points. She added two rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Grace Efosa was held to single digits for the first time since the season opener (four points), halting a career-best streak of 11-straight games in double figures. However, she dished a career-best five assists and added two rebounds and two blocked shots.
• Providence won the glass with a 42-37 rebounding advantage.

• Providence College will open its BIG EAST Conference slate on Saturday, Dec. 21 at Seton Hall. The game will be played at Walsh Gymnasium in South Orange, N.J. and is scheduled to tip-off at 1:00 p.m.
