Nittany Lions Pull Away In Second Half To Defeat Friars, 68-51

Friars return to action on Saturday, Dec. 14 against Merrimack at Noon.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Penn State, 68-51, on Dec. 11 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. Providence evened its record at 6-6, while Penn State improved to 9-2.
1ST QUARTER:
• The game was tied, 9-9, with 6:24 remaining in the quarter before Penn State went on an 8-2 run to claim a 17-11 lead (2:09).
• The Friars' defense held Penn State scoreless the remainder of the quarter and Providence inched within two points at the break (17-15).
2ND QUARTER:
• Penn State pushed its lead to six (23-17) with 4:28 on the clock.
• Brynn Farrell hit a three to end a three-minute scoring drought for Providence and make it a 23-20 game with 3:32 on the clock.
• Emily Archibald collected her second steal of the game and converted in transition to get Providence within one (23-22) with 3:16 on the clock.
• PSU took a 27-24 lead into halftime on the strength of Gracie Merkle's 17 first-half points. Merkle scored all 10 of the Nittany Lions' points in the second quarter.
• Farrell and Archibald each scored eight points to lead the Friars in the first half.
3RD QUARTER:
• The Nittany Lions started the third quarter with an 11-0 run before Grace Efosa hit the Friars' first bucket with 5:15 remaining (38-26).
• PSU pushed the lead to 15 before Efosa scored six-straight points to cut the deficit to nine (45-36) with 25-seconds left.
• Penn State's Jayla Oden beat the buzzer with a driving lay-up to close the quarter (47-36).
4TH QUARTER:
• The Friars went without a field goal for over four minutes while Penn State extended its lead to 19 (61-42).
• The lead ballooned to 21 before Providence rallied for a 7-0 run to get within 65-51 with 2:05 remaining in the game.
• Penn State outscored Providence 21-15 in the fourth quarter overall to claim the 68-51 win.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Efosa paced the team in scoring for the 11th-straight game with 15 points. She also contributed seven rebounds and three assists.
• Archibald finished with a season-high 12 points and also grabbed seven rebounds and collected a career-high six steals.
• PSU's Merkle finished the night with 24 points and 18 rebounds.
• The Nittany Lions out-rebounded the Friars 44-29 and outscored Providence 13-2 in second-chance points.
