Friars will host UConn in BIG EAST Quarterfinals on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
NO. 2-SEED AND NO. 25 NATIONALLY RANKED PROVIDENCE TO FACE NO. 7-SEED CONNECTICUT IN BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTERFINAL ROUND... No. 2-Seed Providence College will host the No. 7-Seed UConn Huskies (8-3-6, 3-2-3 BIG EAST) in a BIG EAST Championship Quarterfinal Round on Saturday Nov. 9 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. The match will kick-off at 7:00 p.m. and stream on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
FRIARS TAKE DOWN XAVIER TO SECURE BIG EAST EAST DIVISION CO-CHAMPION TITLE...The Providence College men's soccer team defeated the defending BIG EAST Champions, Xavier Musketeers, 1-0, in the team's final regular season match on Saturday, Nov.2. With the win, Providence was deemed the BIG EAST East Division Co-Champion of the regular season for the first time in program history.
Senior Cole Dewhurst (Lancaster, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season in the 73rd minute to clinch the victory for the Friars.
Providence held a 13-7 advantage in shots, including a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. The Friars also led in corner kicks, 9-5.
Lukas Burns (Cinnaminson, N.J.) collected five saves in goal for Providence to register his sixth shutout of the season and 22nd of his career. He was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week on Nov.4 in the league's final weekly honors recognition of the season following his outstanding performance.
PROVIDENCE QUALIFIES FOR ITS TWENTY-FOURTH BIG EAST TOURNAMENT, MARKING ITS SECOND APPEARANCE AS THE SECOND SEED... After the team's victory over Xavier, the Friars secured their 24th appearance in the BIG EAST Championship. Providence earned the No. 2 seed for only the second time in program history. The last time they were seeded second was in 2021, when they advanced to the championship round and made a deep run in the NCAA Tournament, reaching the third round.
PROVIDENCE IS RANKED NO. 25 IN THE COUNTRY
As of November 5, 2024, the Providence College Friars men's soccer team is ranked 25th in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll. This marks the the team's third appearance in the Top-25 this season, having previously been ranked 18th and 23rd.
FRIARS ENTER BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP AS TOP-25 RPI CONTENDER
The Friars enter the BIG EAST Championship ranked 24th nationally in the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI).
Other BIG EAST teams in the top 30- Georgetown stands at 10, while Akron is ranked 27.
The University of Connecticut comes into the match ranked 66 in RPI.
FRIARS VS. CONNECTICUT ALL-TIME
Providence trails the all-time series against UConn 24-9-2. This upcoming game marks the second meeting of the 2024 season, following the Friars' recent 2-1 victory over the Huskies in Storrs on October 23.
The only previous meeting between the two teams in the BIG EAST Tournament occurred in 1984, which marked Providence's debut in the BIG EAST Championship final. In that match, the Friars were defeated by Connecticut, 1-0.
2024 REGULAR-SEASON MEETING
The Friars defeated the Hukies, 2-1, during their regular-season match-up on Oct. 23 in Storrs, Conn.
Providence held the edge in total shots (14-11) and shots on goal (4-3), while both teams were evenly matched with two saves and two corner kicks each.
Graduate players Israel Neto (Salvador, Brazil) and Aidan Davock (Medway, Mass.) each scored a goal, with Davock's decisive game-winner in the 80th minute secured the Friars' fourth roadvictory of the season.
FRIARS MAKE THEIR 17TH BIG EAST QUARTERFINAL APPEARANCE
The Friars have now advanced to the BIG EAST Quarterfinals 17 times in program history.
This will be the first time the Friars enter the Quarterfinals as the No. 2-seed.
FRIARS LOOK TO IMROVE TO 6-0 IN BIG EAST QUARTERFINALS AT HOME
The Friars hold an 8-3 all-time record in BIG EAST Championship home games including a perfect 5-0 mark in in BIG EAST Quarterfinals held on their home turf.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
The Friars enter the BIG EAST Championship with a 10-4-3 overall record.
For the first time in program history, Providence ended the regular season as the BIG EAST East Division Co-Champion, entering the BIG EAST Championship as the No. 2 seed. The last time the Friars were seeded second was in 2021, when they reached the BIG EAST Championship game and advanced to the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament.
Providence enters postseason play on a three-game win streak, including a 1-0 win over the defending BIG EAST Champions, Xavier on Nov. 2.
FRIARS ARE 5-0-1 WHEN SCORING TWO-OR-MORE GOALS
Providence has posted a 5-0-1 record when scoring two-or-more goals in a game.
BALANCED ATTACK
Ten different players on the roster have scored at least one goal, and five of those 10 players are multi-goal scorers.
SECOND HALF SURGE
Providence has scored 13 of its 20 goals this season during the second half.
FRIARS ARE 1-0 AGAINST RANKED TEAMS
On September 20, Providence pulled off an upset win over No. 8-ranked Seton Hall in their BIG EAST opener at Chapey Field in Providence, R.I.
Midfielder Rodrigo Vaza (Torres Vedras, Portugal) recorded the game-winner in the 21st minute off a give-and-go with Neto.
Goalkeeper Lukas Burns recorded one save on the night to mark his third shutout of the season.
TRANSFER POWERHOUSE
Eighteen of the 20 Friar goals this season have come from transfer students. Transfers Pepe Lora (Madrid, Spain), Rosa, Harry Scarborough (Wigan, England), Davock, Vaza, Neto, and Kevin Castañeda (Providence, R.I.) have all recorded goals this season.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Junior Bruno Rosa (Cascais, Portugal) leads Providence with 13 points, four goals and five assists.
Davock shares the team lead in goals with Rosa and is currently tied for third in the conference in game-winning goals. Davock's older brother, Trevor, was also a transfer graduate and part of the 2019 squad, where he scored the golden goal at Penn State in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
Graduate student Neto, a graduate transfer from Caldwell University, netted his first goal of the season at UConn earlier this season. Neto continued his scoring streak into the next game where he scored the game-winner at Villanova on October 26.
Freshman defender Vasco Teixeira (Arrentela, Portugal) has had a standout rookie season for the Friars. Teixeira holds three assists on the season so far. He assisted on the deciding goal in the Friars' win at UConn which earned him BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Oct. 28.
Lukas Burns has played 1512 minutes in goal for Providence and owns a 0.95 goals against average and a 0.758 save percentage. He has been the goalkeeper of record in each match this season (10-4-3) and has recorded six clean sheets. Burns was deemed BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year earlier this year.
HEAD COACH CRAIG STEWART MARKS 13TH SEASON WITH 125 WINS AND STELLAR RECORD HEADING INTO UCONN MATCH
Craig Stewart is in the midst of his 13th-year at Providence College and recorded his 100th career win with the Friars on Nov. 11, 2021. He enters Saturday's match against Connecticut with a 125-81-36 record as head coach at Providence. Before taking over the Friars' program in 2012, he spent three seasons as head coach at Franklin Pierce (51-8-6). In 16 years overall as a head coach, Stewart has posted a record of 175-88-36. Stewart has built an impressive coaching career at Providence, leading the team to nine BIG EAST Championship appearances and five NCAA Tournament berths.
SCOUTING CONNECTICUT
The Huskies claimed the No. 7-seed in the BIG EAST Championship after finishing fifth in the BIG EAST East Division.
Providence last faced UConn on Chapey Field in 2023, earning a 3-1 win.
Scott Testori leads the Huskies with 12 points on four goals and four assists. Eli Conway is second in scoring with 11 points on four goals and three assists. Sabri Hanni owns 10 points on four goals and two assists.
Redshirt-freshman, Max Kerkvliet has played 1170 minutes in goal for Connecticut in his debut season. Kerkvliet has registered a 0.62 goals against average and a 0.826 save percentage. He has been the goalkeeper of record in all 13 matches and has posted seven shutouts.

WHAT'S NEXT
The winner of Saturday's Quarterfinal Round match between Providence and UConn will advance to the BIG EAST Championship Semifinals, to face the winner of No. 3-Seed St. John's vs. No. 6-seed Seton Hall.
