Columbia Defeats Women's Basketball In Overtime, 77-69

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by Columbia in overtime, 77-69, on Friday, Nov. 8 in Providence, R.I. The Friars moved to 1-1 on the season, while Columbia improved to 2-0.
1ST QUARTER:
• Columbia hit the first bucket of the game, but then went scoreless for nearly five minutes.
• Providence scored six-straight before the Lions got back on the board with 4:50 to play in the quarter.
• The Friars took a 6-4 lead into the media timeout (4:20).
• Columbia took a 13-12 lead with 1:40 on the clock, but Marta Morales Romero drilled a three for the Friars from the right wing to put Providence back on top 15-13 with 1:18 remaining.
• Nasi Simmons converted Columbia's fourth three of the quarter with 31-seconds remaining to give the Lions a 16-15 lead at the break.
2ND QUARTER:
• Columbia used a 6-0 run to take a 22-17 lead and force a Friars timeout with 7:28 on the clock in the second.
• Grace Efosa hit a triple out of the timeout to spark a 13-2 Providence run to claim a 30-24 lead with 1:56 remaining.
• The Friars took a 30-28 lead into halftime.
• Efosa paced the Friars' offense in the first half with 10 points, while Riley Weiss scored 10 points for Columbia.
3RD QUARTER:
• A 5-0 spurt gave Columbia a 38-35 advantage with 6:09 on the clock.
• The Friars outscored the Lions 4-2 over the next 40-seconds to get within 40-39 at the media timeout (4:37).
• Brynn Farrell scored seven points for Providence during a 7-2 run to give the Friars a 46-43 lead with 1:26 to play in the third.
• Columbia closed out the quarter with a 4-0 run to gain a 47-46 lead at the break.
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence started the fourth quarter with a 4-0 scoring spurt to take a 50-47 lead, but Columbia answered with a 4-0 run of its own.
• The Friars held a 54-53 lead at the media timeout (4:56).
• Providence claimed a 57-55 lead with 3:02 remaining, but both teams went scoreless until Kitty Henderson tied the game with 54-seconds left (57-57).
• Grace Efosa made one of two free throws with 31-seconds on the clock to give Providence a one-point edge (58-57).
• Columbia called timeout to advance the ball, but the Friars stood tall defensively. Riley Weiss missed a lay-up and Olivia Olsen hauled in the defensive board.
• On the Friars ensuing offensive possession, they were able to run down the clock before Efosa was fouled with 7-seconds remaining.
• Efosa hit one of two free throws to extend the Friars' lead to 59-57.
• Columbia called another timeout to advance the ball, and Perri Page got loose on the right block to tie the game, 59-59. The bucket sent the two teams to overtime.
OVERTIME:
• Efosa opened the OT session with a pull-up jumper (61-59).
• Columbia answered with a 7-0 run to take a 66-61 lead with 3:23 to play.
• Farrell halted the run with a pair of free throws at the 2:56 mark to make the score 66-63.
• Columbia pushed its lead to six (71-65) with 1:58 on the clock, marking its largest lead of the game.
• The Lions extended their lead to eight with four-straight free throws from Weiss.
• Farrell scored in the paint for Providence with 12-seconds left to make it a 75-69 game.
• Columbia closed out the game for a 77-69 win.
NOTES:
• Efosa paced four Friars in double figures with 18 points.
• Kylee Sheppard, Morales Romero and Farrell each added 11 points.
• Olivia Olsen grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and added six points, two assists and two blocked shots.
• Freshman Orlagh Gormley led the Friars in assists (four) and steals (three).
• Weiss led all scorers in the game with 25 points for Columbia and Henderson added 18 points.
• Perri Page finished with a double-double for the Lions on 11 points and 12 rebounds.
• The Friars outscored the Lions 21-11 in points off turnovers, but Columbia held a 42-26 scoring edge in the paint.
