Friars Defeat Vermont On The Road, 58-53

Grace Efosa scored a game-high 20 points, including 15 in the second half.

BURLINGTON, VT. – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Vermont, 58-53, in non-conference action on Tuesday, Nov. 12 in Burlington, Vt. Graduate student Grace Efosa led all scorers with 20 points, including 15 in the second half. The Friars improved to 2-1 on the season, while Vermont dropped to 1-2 overall.
 
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars got out to a 6-0 lead through the first two minutes of play on 3-3 shooting.
• Providence went into the media timeout (4:12) with a 7-5 advantage following a 5-1 spurt by Vermont.
• Providence held an 11-9 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter.
• Efosa and Olivia Olsen combined to score nine of the Friars' 11 points.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• The Catamounts took their first lead of the game (13-11) after scoring four-straight points to start the second quarter.
Kylee Sheppard drilled a three for Providence's first points of the frame to reclaim the lead (14-13) with 5:28 on the clock.
• The Friars used a 7-0 run during a span of 2:10 late in the quarter to gain a 23-15 lead and force a Vermont timeout with 1:27 to play in the half.
• The Friars' defense held the Catamounts scoreless over the final 3:37 of the second quarter.
• Olsen paced Providence with six points and five rebounds in the first half.
 
3RD QUARTER:
Orlagh Gormley opened the third with a three-pointer from the left wing on Providence's first possession, extending the scoring run to 10-0 (26-15).
• Vermont rallied back to within four with a 7-0 run and managed to cut the deficit to 30-27 at the media timeout (4:03).
• Efosa scored all six points in a 6-2 spurt to close the third quarter, giving the Friars a 36-30 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• A 7-0 run pushed the Friars' lead back to double figures (43-32) with 7:58 on the clock.
• Vermont ended a 2:39 scoring drought with a pair of three-point buckets on consecutive possessions. 
• The Friars called timeout with a 45-38 advantage on the scoreboard and 5:29 remaining in the game.
• The Catamounts cut the deficit to three on two occasions before Efosa converted an and-1 with 1:38 to play (52-46).
• The teams exchanged baskets before Vermont's Keira Hanson hit a three with 23-seconds remaining to make it a 54-51 game.
• Providence failed to gain separation on the scoreboard at the free throw line, going 2-6 during a critical span of the game. However, timely offensive rebounds by Gormley and Archibald helped the Friars maintain possession.
• Archibald was 3-4 from the foul line in the final 12 seconds of regulation to help seal the win.
 
NOTES:
• Efosa scored 15 of her game-high 20 points in the second half. She shot 9-12 from the field in the game, including 7-8 shooting in the second half.
• Archibald chipped in 10 points and added two assists and a game-high seven rebounds and four steals.
• Gormley posted the first double-digit game with the Friars (10 points) and recorded three rebounds, two assists and one steal.
• Providence shot 51.1-percent from the field (23-45), including 4-8 from beyond the arc (.500). The Friars struggled at the foul line, hitting just 8-15 attempts (.533).
• Providence outscored Vermont in points off turnovers (16-9), points in the paint (28-22) and second-chance points (9-7). 
• The rebounding battle was even for the game, 29-29.
• The Friars improved to 4-3 all-time against Vermont and have won three-straight games in the series between the two teams. PC's victory on Tuesday night marked the first win over Vermont at Patrick Gymnasium in Burlington, Vt. 
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Sunday, Nov. 17 against Boston College. The game will be played at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass. and is scheduled to tip off at 12:00 p.m.
