Friars Rally From 15-Point Halftime Deficit To Stun Villanova In Overtime, 82-76

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team rallied from a 15-point halftime deficit to stun Villanova in overtime, 82-76, on Jan. 24 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 10-11 overall and evened their record in BIG EAST Conference play at 4-4. The Wildcats dropped to 12-7 overall (5-3 BIG EAST).
 
1ST QUARTER:
• Villanova came out of the gates quickly to take a 17-6 lead at the first media timeout (4:25).
• The Wildcats hit eight of their first 10 shot attempts during the span and were paced by Zanai Jones' nine points on 4-4 shooting.
• Providence scored five-straight points at the foul line to inch within six (17-11) at the 2:22 mark.
• Villanova held a 24-13 lead at the intermission.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• The Friars started the second quarter on a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to six (26-20) with 8:40 on the clock.
• The Wildcats finished the frame with a 13-6 scoring advantage to take a 41-26 lead into halftime.
• Providence shot just 22.6-percent in the first half (7-31). Ten of the Friars' 26 points came from the free-throw line (10-12).
• Villanova shot 54.5-percent in the first half (18-33) and outscored the Friars 13-4 in points off turnovers.
 
3RD QUARTER:
Grace Efosa scored 14 points to help Providence start the third on an 21-2 run. The effort helped the Friars take the lead (47-43) with 1:56 left in the quarter.
• The Friars outscored the Wildcats 24-7 overall and carried a 50-48 lead into the fourth quarter.
• Providence shot 69-percent in the third (9-13), while hold Villanova to just 20-percent (3-15).
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Villanova started the fourth with a 11-2 scoring run to force a Providence timeout. The run helped the Wildcats claim a 59-52 lead with 7:10 on the clock.
• Efosa scored on back-to-back possessions out of the timeout to make it a three-point game (59-56).
• Morales Romero drilled a three-pointer with 2:26 on the clock to tie the game, 64-64.
• Kaitlyn Orihel answered with a three for 'Nova to regain the lead (67-64) with 1:47 remaining.
• Farrell hit one of two free throws and Olivia Olsen came up with a steal on the defensive end.
• Efosa was fouled and converted both of her attempts to tie the game, 67-67, with 51-seconds remaining.
• Villanova called timeout to advance the ball into the offensive end, but Bella Runyan's shot attempt was off the mark and Farrell hauled in the defensive board.
• After a Providence timeout, Morales Romero drove to the bucket to give the Friars a 69-67 lead with 20-seconds left.
• Farrell grabbed another defensive board and Providence advanced the ball with its final timeout of the game. However, the Friars turned over the ensuring inbound pass.
• Runyan scored for Villanova with 2-seconds remaining and the game went to overtime.
 
OVERTIME:
• Morales Romero drilled her fourth three of the game to start the overtime session (72-69).
• The bucket sparked a 10-2 scoring advantage for Providence, giving the squad a 79-71 lead with 51-seconds to play.
• The Friars took the win with a 13-7 scoring advantage overall in OT.
 
NOTES:
• The Friars improved to 5-1 all-time against the Wildcats in overtime.
• Efosa and Morales Romero combined to score 55 points in the game. Efosa (29) and Morales Romero (26) are the first pair of Friars to score 20+ points in BIG EAST regular-season game since Jan. 18, 2019. On that day, Jovana Nogic (24) and Maddie Jolin (20) achieved the feat against Butler.
• It marked Efosa's second 20+ point game of the season and third of her career. Morales Romero eclipsed the 20-point mark for the first time.
• Olsen recorded her BIG EAST-best ninth double-double of the season on 11 points and 13 rebounds. She added three assists, three blocked shots and three steals.
• Farrell rounded out the list of Friars in double figures with 11 points. She joined Olsen with a team-best three assists.
• Providence recovered from a poor shooting performance in the first half (.226, 7-31) to shoot a combined 69.2-percent in the second half and overtime (18-26).
• The Friars battle of the boards with a 45-36 rebounding advantage.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Saturday, Jan. 27 against Xavier. The game will be played at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio and is scheduled to tip-off at 2:00 p.m.
