ATTLEBORO, Mass.– The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Friar Invitational today (Sept. 8) at the Mark Coogan Course at Highland Park in Attleboro, Mass. Junior
Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealnd) won the women's race (4k) in a time of 13:56.2 and led the team to a first-place finish over three other teams. It marks the fourth-consecutive year that the Friar women's team has won the Friar Invitational. Junior Abdel Laadjel (lucan, Ireland) won the men's race (6k) in a time of 18:03.6, leading the Friar men's team to a second-place finish overall.
"I was very happy with the women's team today," Friar Coach
Ray Treacy said. "Kim trained really well all summer. I was expecting something like this from her. Very happy as well with the ladies who came in behind. Laura and Lilly had a good race. Pleased especially with Shannon, Jane and Annabelle not racing yet. When you insert them into the lineup, we should do pretty well."
Led by May, the Providence women's team scored 25 points and defeated UConn (41 points), Stony Brook (66 points) and New Hampshire (118 points). Other Friars who scored on the women's side were
Lilly Tuck of Sunderland, Canada (third, 14:14.0),
Laura Mooney of Cappincur, Ireland (fifth, 14:21.4),
Reese Fahys of East Greenwich, R.I. (sixth, 14:22.9), and
Cara Laverty of Derry, Ireland (10th, 14:51.6).
"We ran really well as a team today," May said. "We worked together for the first lap and followed Ray's instructions that we should go after the first lap if we feel good. I felt really good, so I picked it up for the second lap. Today showed how good we are as a team as we didn't bring out a full squad. So, I'm really excited for the rest of the season with the girls."
Finishing second overall, the Providence men's team scored 67 points. Stony Brook finished first with 39 points. Teams finishing behind the Friars were, UConn (72 points), Brown (74 points), Rhode Island (114 points),and New Hampshire (134 points). Following Laadjel for the Friars was Liam Back of New Plymouth, New Zealand (sixth, 18:26.4), Luke Coffin of Annapolis, Md. (10th, 18:54.4), Grady Satterfield of Bowdoinham, Maine (23rd, 19:27.1) and Zane Powell of Auckland, New Zealand (27th, 19:37.6).
"It was nice to see Abdel run a great cross country race," Treacy said. "He should have a great season."
"It was really warm and humid, the past week we knew it was going to be like that," Laadjel said. "We came here the other day for practice, so we knew what we were in for. I came in the race hoping I could come in the top-three. After 1k I felt it was time to break the group up a little and start running. I kind of slingshotted myself out and kept going. That was the plan and it worked out today."
The Friar men's and women's teams will return to action on Saturday, September 23 at the University of Virginia Invitational in Charlottesville, VA beginning at 9:00 a.m.
