PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams are set to compete in the Friar Invitational on Friday, Sept. 8 at the Mark Coogan Course at Highland Park in Attleboro, Mass. It will commence with the women's race at 3:15pm, followed by the men's race at 4:00pm. The Friar women will race against Stonybrook, New Hampshire, and UConn. The Friar men will face Stonybrook, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, UConn and Brown.
The women will be led by senior
Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada). Tuck finished first at the 2022 Friar Invitational in a time of 17:16.42. Following the Friar Invitational, Tuck placed 37
th (20:14.8) at Lehigh's Paul Short Invitational and sixth (20:27) at the BIG EAST Championship, earning her fourth All-BIG EAST accolade. At the NCAA Northeast Region Championship, she placed 25
th (21:10.3) before competing at the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championship where she finished in a time of 20:57.8. Junior
Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand) had a successful sophomore season for the Friars after placing 17
th (21:02.3) at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship, and earning All-BIG EAST Honors. May placed 32
nd (21:15.9) at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship and 138
th (20:51.3) at the NCAA Cross Country Championship.
The men's cross country team will be led by senior
Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand) and junior
Abdel Laadjel (Lucan, Ireland). Back finished third (24:40.84) at the 2022 Friar Invitational and 12th (23:17.3) at the Lehigh Paul Short Invitational. Back earned a personal best in the 5,000 meters of 13:39.75, after redshirting the outdoor track season.
Laadjel enters his junior season following an impressive outdoor track season. At the BIG EAST Outdoor Track Championship, Laadjel placed second in the 10,000 meters with a personal best time of 29:12.50. Laadjel also competed for Ireland at the European Athletics U23 Championship in July 2023. He entered the 10,000-meter race with the 15th seeded time and finished fourth at the Championship in a time of 29:23.33 to close out a successful year.
