Women’s Soccer Welcomes Columbia

Kick-off is set for Saturday, September 16 at 6:00 p.m.

PROVIDENE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team will face Columbia University in a non-conference match on Saturday, September 16 in Providence, R.I. The Friars enter the weekend with a 5-1-0 overall record.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS… The Friars enter this weekend with a 5-1-0 overall record, suffering their first loss of the season on Sept. 7 against Rutgers. The Friars defense has only let up one goal through the first six games. 
 
Senior Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.) and freshman Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Canada) lead the Friars offense with six points each through the first six games. Hughes owns a team-best three goals, while Briggs has scored one goal and dished a team-best four assists. Briggs currently ranks first in assists for the BIG EAST while Hughes ranks third in goals for the BIG EAST.
 
Senior Kyla Gallagher (Stamford, Conn.)  and sophomore Thaea Mouratidis (Scarborough, Canada) each have five points for Providence. Gallagher has tallied two goals and one assist, while Mouratidis ranks second on the team in assists (three) and has scored one goal.
 
Goalkeepers Emma Bodmer (Monroe Township, N.J.) and Katherine McElroy (Brookline, Mass.) have combined for 27 saves and have let in one goal. The duo have split time in net this season, each logging 270 minutes of action. Bodmer has faced 24 shots and allowed zero goals. McElroy has faced 23 shots and allowed one goal. 
 
THREE MEMBERS OF THE FRIARS QUALIFY FOR THE 2024 FIFA UNDER-20 WORLD CUP… Two sophomores, Ella McBride(Peterborough, Canada) and Thaea Mouratidis (Scarborough, Canada), and incoming freshman Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Canada) have qualified for the 2024 FIFA Under-20 World Cup with Canada Soccer's Under-20 Women's National Team. The team earned a third-place finish at the Concacaf Women's Under-20 Championship after defeating Costa Rica, 5-3, in the third-place game.
 
MEG HUGHES NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST TEAM… Hughes was the lone Friar to receive preseason recognition as a member of the Preseason ALL-BIG EAST Team. This is Meg Hughes's third year in a row being named to the Preseason ALL-BIG EAST Team. Hughes has played 55 career games for the Friars and has totaled 49 points on 18 goals and 13 assists. She currently ranks ninth on the Friars' all-time scoring list.
 
KYLA GALLAGHER NAMED BIG EAST OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK… Gallagher, who was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, helped lead the offense with a goal in each game. She tallied four shots on goal and played a combined 151 minutes in the two games.
 
THAEA MOURATIDIS NAMED BIG EAST OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK… Mouratidis, who was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, led Providence with three assists and one goal through two games. She assisted on the game winning goal against Brown and registered a career-high four points on two assists and one goal against Temple. 
 
KAYLA BRIGGS NAMED BIG EAST FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK FOR THE SECOND TIME… Briggs, who was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, scored the game winning goal against Brown. This is the second time in three weeks she has earned the league's Freshman of the Week accolades. 
 
ABBEY FINN NAMED TO TOP DRAWER SOCCER'S TEAM OF THE WEEK… Finn, who was named to Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week September 5 helped lead the Friars defense to two shut-out victories. The Friars defense has not surrendered a goal to their opponents through the first five games. Finn was also named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll this same week. 
 
NEWCOMERS…Providence welcomes nine student-athletes to the program this season including three graduate transfers and six freshmen. The three graduate transfers are Corinne Dente(Stamford, Conn.), Emma Derry (Leominster, Mass.), and Katherine McElroy (Brookline, Mass.). Dente played 37 career games at forward for University of Louisville totaling two goals and one assist. Derry started 50 of her 59 career games on the backline for the University of Rhode Island where she registered two assists. McElroy was a four-year member of the women's soccer program at the University of Michigan where she appeared in goal for five games during the 2022 season.
 
The incoming freshman class includes Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Canada), Araceli Cloutier (Bedford, N.H.), Marryn Gruhn (Northport, N.Y.), Samantha Kolb (Long Beach, N.Y.), Naiya McFarlane (Ajax, Canada), and Ava Ripanti (Townsend, Del.). 
 
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST COLUMBIA… This will be the first time the Friars face Columbia University. 
 
SCOUTING THE LIONS… Columbia enters Saturday night with a 5-1-1 record. This past week they beat NJIT, 5-0.  
 
Columbia has 12 different goal scorers on the season. Senior Kat Jordan leads the team with 10 points on four goals, followed by sophomore Maia Tabion, who has nine points. Ania Prussak leads the defense with eight points. The Lions have outscored opponents 21-1.
 
UP NEXT… The Friars will begin BIG EAST play next week against Seton Hall on Thursday, September 21 at 6:00p.m. The game will be played on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I.
