Bakersfield, Calif. – The Providence College volleyball team opened its 2023 season at the Cal State Bakersfield Tournament on Friday, Aug. 25 in Bakersfield Calif. The Friars fell to Southern Utah in four sets (3-1).
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Southern Utah earned a 25-21 victory in the first set.
- Southern Utah got off to a quick 4-1 lead.
- The Friars battled back cutting the score to 10-9.
- The Thunderbirds went on a 7-2 run to claim a 23-15 advantage.
- Providence went on 5-0 run, cutting the score to 23-20.
- Southern Utah closed out the set to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the second set, 26-24
- The two teams went back-and-forth to start to reach a 7-7 tie.
- Southern Utah went on a 7-3 run in the middle of the set to take a 17-13 lead.
- The Friars fought back and took a one point lead late in the second set (19-18).
- The set was tied six times down the stretch.
- Providence won the second set, 26-24.

Kayla Grant and
Lyric Berry both led the Friars with seven kills through the first two sets.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Southern Utah took the third set, 25-,18 for a 2-1 edge in the match.
- The Thunderbirds got off to a quick 5-0 lead and continued to hold the lead through the set.
- The closets the Friars got to Southern Utah was three points.
- Utah State held on to the lead the whole set winning 25-17.

Macy Taylor recorded four kills for the Friars in the third set.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Southern Utah won the fourth set, 25-18
, to take the match.
- The Friars got off to a 4-0 lead to start the set.
- The Thunderbirds went on an 8-5 run to take a 10-8 lead.
- The Friars controlled the lead through the middle of the set.
- Southern Utah fought back and tied the match ,15-15.
- The Thunderbirds scored eight unanswered points to claim a 22-15 lead.
- Southern Utah closed out the set 25-18.

Shaliyah Rhoden registered four kills for the Friars in the fourth set.
MATCH NOTES:
- Grant led the Friars in with 13 kills and compiled a .462 hitting percentage.

Savannah Ivie led Providence in digs, with 12.
- The Friars notched 45 kills and 50 digs.
