PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track East Preliminary competitions are scheduled for May 24-27 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. The Providence College men's and women's track teams have nine athletes (six men, three women) who qualified for the First Round.
The runners competing at the NCAA First Round will attempt to qualify for the NCAA Finals which will be held June 7-10 in Austin, Texas.
The nine Friars who have qualified are:
Graduate student
Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) – Rocha posted a win (13:41.83) in the 5,000 meters at the Friar Invitational, his first meet of the season. Following the Friar Invitational, Rocha returned at the Penn Relays where he won the College Men's 10,000-Meter Championship (28:53.42). Rocha's finishing time of 28:53.42 at Penn Relays qualified him for NCAA First Round.
Graduate student
David McGlynn (Waterford, Ireland) – At the Friar Invitational McGlynn finished the 5,000 meters in a time of 14:14.08. McGlynn finished second at Penn Relays with his qualifying seed time of 28:59.86. At the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, he competed in the 10,000 meters and finished in a time of 29:34.00 for third place.
Junior
Shane Coffey (Naas, Ireland) – Coffey opened his outdoor track season at the Raleigh Relays where he ran the 10,000 meters in a time of 29:25.60. He then competed in the 5,000 meters at the Friar Invitational and finished in a time of 13:59.07. At the Penn Relays Coffey secured fourth place and achieved his 10,000 meters qualifying seed time of 29:22.84.
Graduate student
David Principe, Jr. (Johnston, R.I.) – Principe opened his outdoor season at the Raleigh Relays with an impressive 13:38.52 in the 5,000 meters for fourth place that qualified him for the NCAA First Round. He then ran an 8:06.52 to win the 3,000 meters at the Friar Invitational.
Sophomore
Abdel Laadjel (Lucan, Ireland) – At the Raleigh Relays, Laadjel opened his season with a 13:53.80 time in the 5,000 meters. Laadjel then ran a 13:44.28 in the 5,000 meters at the Friar Invitational for a second-place finish and qualified him a spot for the first round. Following the Friar Invitational, Laadjel finished second in the 10,000 meters at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track Championships where he ran a 29:12.50.
Junior
Pat Thygesen (Brisbane, Australia) – Thygesen qualified for the men's steeplechase in his first appearance of the season at the Raleigh Relays where he placed third in the event in a time of 8:33.78.
Sophomore
Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand) – May opened the outdoor season at the Raleigh Relays with a sixth-place finish in the 1,500 meters where she ran a 4:13.24. May's time qualified her for NCAA First Round. May then won the 800 meters at the Friar Invitational running a 2:05.00 in the event. At the BIG EAST Outdoor Track Championship, May ran a 2:05.77 in the 800 meters for third place.
Junior
Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) – Flockhart opened the outdoor season running a 4:36.89 in the mile at the Friar Invitational for first place. She then ran a 4:14.46 in the 1500-meter finals at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track Championships earning first place. This time qualified her for the 1500-meter event at the NCAA First Round.
Freshman
Jane Buckley (Cork, Ireland) – After redshirting the indoor track season, Buckley began her collegiate track career at the Raleigh Relays. Buckley finished eighth in the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:46.24, which earned her a spot in the first round of the NCAA's. She then won the 3,000 meters at the Friar Invitational in a time of 9:09.78. Continuing her impressive collegiate start, Buckley ran the 5,000 meters in 15:55.10 for third place at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track Championships.
