Last Time Out...vs. UMass Lowell
- No. 18/19 UMass Lowell opened a 2-0 lead and held on for a 2-1 win over the Providence College men's hockey team on Saturday night (Feb. 18) at Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass. The Friars' three-game unbeaten streak was snapped (2-0-1).
- The River Hawks controlled the play in the early going, rushing out a 9-0 advantage in shots.
- UMass Lowell on the board first, but the Friars successfully challenged for offsides to wipe out the goal.
- Providence was able to generate some momentum on the power play but couldn't convert.
- Owen Cole gave the hosts a 1-0 lead at 19:13 of the first period on a rebound chance. Providence challenged again for offsides on the entry but the call on the ice stood.
- UMass Lowell extended the lead to 2-0 on Brehdan Engum's goal off an odd-man rush at 7:56 of the second period.
- Bennett Schimek brought the Friars back within one just four minutes later as he poked in a rebound off a tough angle bid from Chase Yoder for his 10th goal of the season.
- The Friars had a chance late as they were on the power play with 2:15 remaining after Craig Needham was hooked down in the defensive zone.
- Despite multiple chances, the River Hawks closed the game out to secure the 2-1 win.
 
Seniors To Be Recognized On Saturday
- The Friars will honor their eight seniors on Saturday night – Luke Johnson, Cam McDonald, Patrick Moynihan, Craig Needham, Jamie Engelbert, Parker Ford, Max Crozier and Austin Roden.
 
 
Parker Ford and Max Crozier Named Hobey Baker Nominees
Providence College senior co-captains Max Crozier (Calgary, Alta.) and Parker Ford (Wakefield, R.I.) were named nominees for the 2023 Hobey Baker Award on Thursday (Jan. 19). Crozier is tied for second on the team in scoring with 22 points and leads all Friars with 19 assists. The 19 assists rank eighth overall among all Hockey East players and are a single-season career-high for the senior. Crozier also boasts a +12 rating and has blocked a team-high 53 shots this season. Ford leads all Friars in scoring with 25 points on 11 goals and 14 assists. His +19 rating ranks third in Hockey East. Ford also ranks eighth among NCAA players in faceoff wins with 400 while his overall faceoff success rate this season is 58.6%. Ford was also named one of 25 semifinalists for the 71st Walter Brown Award, presented annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England.
 
Eighteen Current, Former and Future Friars Appear in NHL Development Camps
The Friars boasted 18 past, present and future players that appeared in NHL Development Camps back in July. Shorthanded Success
With three shorthanded goals during the weekend of Dec. 30-31, the Friars now rank sixth in the NCAA in that category with six shorties this season - four behind leader Ohio State (10).
 
Crozier and Ford Named Captains; McDonald Added To Leadership Group
The Friars anointed seniors Max Crozier and Parker Ford as the team's co-captains for the 2022-23 season. Both players were alternate captains last season. Prior to last Friday's game at Boston College, senior defenseman Cam McDonald was named an alternate captain.

Providence ices the sixth youngest roster in the NCAA with an average age of 21.1 years and has a combined 16 first and second year players out of a 29-player roster.
 
Desharnais Makes NHL Debut With Edmonton; Stauber With Chicago
Former Friar Vincent Desharnais '19 made his NHL debut with the Edmonton Oilers on Jan. 11 in Anaheim. Through 17 games, he has four assists with a +10 rating. Jaxson Stauber stopped 29-of-32 shots he faced and earned the win in his NHL debut in St. Louis on Jan. 21. He's the fourth goaltender is Friar history to play in the NHL and the 45th overall player. Stauber was the first Blackhawks goaltender in team history to win his first three starts in the NHL after a 4-3 OT win over Arizona on Feb. 10. He's 5-1 with a 2.88 GAA and .911 save percentage in six NHL games.
 
Friars at the World Junior Championships
Freshman Jaroslav Chmelar made his second appearance in the World Junior Championships with Czechia. Through seven games, Chmelar posted three goals and two assists  with a +8 rating and earned a silver medal after Czechia was defeated in overtime by Canada, 3-2, in the gold medal game.
 
Three is the Magic Number
The Friars are 204-20-23 all-time under Nate Leaman when scoring three or more goals in a game.
 
After 40
The Friars are 185-7-19 all-time under Nate Leaman when holding a lead after two periods.
 
Series History vs. Boston University (PC trails 59-112-19, .361)
The Friars and Terriers close out the regular season with their first meeting of the year on Friday night at Agganis Arena, opening up a weekend home-and-home series. The Terriers have won three straight in the series dating back to January of 2021. Providence earned a 7-3 win at Walter Brown Arena on Jan. 8, 2021 but have not scored a victory at Agganis Arena since Oct. 26, 2018. Boston University sits in first place in Hockey East entering the final weekend and aims to capture the regular season title.
