Seton Hall Pulls Away In Second Half To Defeat Women's Hoops, 77-52

Nariah Scott scored a career-high 19 points on 8-14 shooting.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Seton Hall, 77-52, at Walsh Gymnasium in South Orange, N.J. on Feb. 4. The Pirate improved to 15-8 (8-5 BIG EAST), while the Friars dropped to 13-12 (4-10 BIG EAST).
 
1ST QUARTER:
Grace Efosa scored the Friars' first six points on a straight-away three and a traditional three-point play (6-5).
• Providence and Seton Hall were tied, 9-9, at the media timeout (4:59).
• The Friars' defense forced three Seton Hall turnovers and held the Pirates scoreless for two-and a half minutes enroute to a 15-11 lead.
• Providence held a 17-15 lead at the intermission.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Seton Hall used a 9-0 run during a span of 2:08 to take a 27-19 lead. Sidney Cooks scored seven points in the run.
• Efosa halted the run with a jumper at the 6:14 mark of the quarter (27-21).
• The Friars trailed by as many as eight in the frame, but cut the deficit to 33-30 with 1:39 on the clock.
• Providence trailed 36-32 at halftime.
• Efosa, Kylee Sheppard and Nariah Scott combined to shoot 13-18 from the field in the first half to score 30 of the Friars' 32 points. The rest of the team shot 1-14 from the floor.
• Efosa paced all scorers with 14 points on 6-7 shooting, while Olivia Olsen led the Friars with five rebounds.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Seton Hall started the third with a 7-0 run and forced a Friars' timeout with 6:31 on the clock (43-32). It marked the first double-digit lead of the game for either team.
• Sheppard got the Friars' on the board for their first bucket of the second half at the 5:19 mark.
• At the media timeout, Seton Hall held a 48-36 lead.
• Seton Hall outscored Providence 24-8 in the third quarter to take a 20-point lead into the final 10 minutes. Cooks scored 12 points in the frame.
• Providence shot just 3-16 in the quarter (.188), while Seton Hall converted 10-15 attempts from the field (.667).
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence held the Pirates scoreless for a stretch of 2:31 and outscored the Pirates 6-2 to get within 16 (62-46).
• An 11-2 run stretched the Pirates lead to 27 (77-50) with 3:03 remaining in regulation enroute to the 77-52 win.
 
NOTES:
• Scott scored a career-high 19 points on 8-14 shooting from the field, including 2-2 from beyond the arc.
• Scott has reached double-figures in the scoring column during each of the last three games – establishing career highs each time and marking the first double-digit games of her career.
• Efosa was held scoreless in the second half, finishing the game with 14 points, six boards and one steal.
• Sheppard netted 10 points on 5-9 shooting.
• Olsen hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds and added seven points and three steals.
• Seton Hall dominated the paint, 40-24, and held a 35-32 advantage on the glass.
• Cooks scored 29 points for Seton Hall and Lauren Park-Lane chipped in 21.
• Azana Baines provided a big lift on the offensive end with 17 points on 8-9 shooting.
• Providence will play four of its final six games at home in Alumni Hall.
 
UP NEXT:
• The Friars return to Alumni Hall for three-consecutive home games. The home stand begins on Saturday, Feb. 11 vs. Butler at 1:00 p.m. Providence also will welcome Marquette (Feb. 15) and DePaul (Feb. 18).
