Strong Second Half Propels DePaul To 86-64 Win Over Providence

Nariah Scott scored a team-high 16 points for the Friars.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to DePaul, 86-64, on Saturday, Feb. 18 in Providence, R.I. The Friars dropped to 13-15 (4-13 BIG EAST), while DePaul improved to 15-13 (8-9 BIG EAST).
 
1ST QUARTER:
• DePaul got out to a 12-3 lead through the first 4:00 minutes of play. All three points for Providence came from the free-throw line, having started 0-7 from the field.
Olivia Olsen converted the Friars' first field goal of the game at the 5:40 mark (12-5).
• Providence was forced to call its second timeout of the first quarter with 3:56 to play as DePaul extended its lead to 17-5 with a 5-0 spurt.
Nariah Scott converted a traditional three-point play out of the time out and sparked a 5-0 spurt for Providence (17-10).
• DePaul scored five-straight points to close the quarter and take a 22-10 lead into the intermission.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence started the second quarter red hot, outscoring DePaul 11-2 through the opening 2:17 to force a Blue Demons timeout. The stretch helped Providence cut the deficit to three (24-21). The Friars were 4-5 from the field, including 3-4 from beyond the arc.
• After a scoreless stretch for both teams, Janai Crooms scored on a lay-up to make it a one-point game (24-23) with 5:21 left.
• DePaul responded with six-straight points to maintain its lead (30-23).
• Olsen ended a three-and-a-half minute scoring drought with 1:55 remaining on the clock and Kylee Sheppard added a three-pointer to get Providence within two (30-28). 
• Providence outscored DePaul 20-13 in the quarter.
• The Blue Demons carried a 35-30 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
• Scott paced the Friars in the first half with eight points and two assists, while Sheppard grabbed a team-best six rebounds.
• Aneesah Morrow and Peoples each tallied nine points for DePaul. Morrow added 10 rebounds.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• DePaul outscored Providence 11-4 to start the third, forcing a Friars timeout at the 7:40 mark (46-34).
• The Friars trailed 55-41 at the media timeout (4:16).
• The Blue Demons shot 61.1-percent in the third quarter (11-18) and outscored the Friars 31-18 to mount an 18-point advantage at the break (66-48).
• Providence shot 40-percent from the field in the third (6-15), but were 5-12 from the foul line (.417).
 
4TH QUARTER:
• DePaul opened the quarter with back-to-back buckets to stretch the lead to 70-48.
• The Friars responded with a 9-2 run that resulted in a Blue Demons timeout with 6:09 remaining (72-57).
• Providence cut the deficit to 13 (75-62) with 3:37 remaining in the game, but it was as close as the Friars could get down the stretch.
• DePaul finished the game with an 11-2 scoring advantage to claim an 86-64 victory.
 
NOTES:
• Scott (16 points) has reached double figures in five of the last six games, marking the first double-digit games of her career.
• Crooms finished with 12 points, five rebounds, one assist and two steals.
• Olsen rounded out the double-digits scorers with 11 points and added seven boards.
• Efosa tallied nine points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Six of her 10 boards came off the offensive glass.
• Sheppard recorded eight points, eight rebounds, three assists and matched her career high in steals (four).
• Morrow led DePaul with 31 points and 22 rebounds to go along with five assists, two steals and three blocked shots.
• Darrione Rogers (18) and Peoples (17) also scored in double figures for the Blue Demons.
• DePaul outscored Providence 51-34 in the second half.
 
UP NEXT:
• Providence will play back-to-back road games at Georgetown (Feb. 21) and No. 14/15 Villanova (Feb. 24). The Friars will close out the regular-season schedule against St. John's on Monday, Feb. 27 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.
