PROVIDENCE COLLEGE RALLIES FROM 20-POINT DEFICIT IN 52-51 LOSS TO MARQUETTE

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team rallied from a 20-point deficit in a 52-51 loss to Marquette on Feb. 15 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. It marked the second-straight one-point loss for the Friars as the team dipped to 13-14 on the season (4-12 BIG EAST). The Golden Eagles improved to 17-8 (10-6 BIG EAST).
1ST QUARTER:
• Marquette held a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
• Providence missed its first six attempts from the field before Olivia Olsen converted the Friars' first bucket at the 4:31 mark (6-2).
• Marquette used a 9-2 run over the final 3:47 of the quarter to claim a 15-6 lead at the intermission.
2ND QUARTER:
• Emily Archibald and Kylee Sheppard hit back-to-back threes for the Friars to start the scoring in the second quarter and get Providence within three (15-12) with 6:48 on the clock.
• Marquette extended its lead to 23-14 with the help of a 6-0 run.
• Sheppard knocked down her second triple of the game at the 2:40 mark to get Providence back within six (23-17).
• The Golden Eagles closed the quarter with an 8-1 scoring advantage over the final 2:40 and took a 31-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.
• Sheppard finished the half with a team-best six points, while Marquette's Chloe Marotta netted 16 points to lead all scorers.
• Providence shot 26.9-percent from the field in the first half (7-26), while Marquette converted 52-percent of its attempts (13-25).
3RD QUARTER:
• Marquette pushed its lead to 20 with 7:24 on the clock, fueled by seven points from Marotta.
• Providence responded with a 15-3 run to get within eight with 2:18 to play (43-35).
• Brynn Farrell made it a seven-point game with an up-and-under move on the right block (44-37) with 49-seconds remaining, but Marotta sank a pair of free throws close the quarter.
• Marquette held a 46-37 lead at the intermission.
4TH QUARTER:
• Farrell scored on the first possession of the quarter (46-39).
• Seven-straight points by Nariah Scott got the Friars within two (48-46) with 4:29 on the clock.
• Marquette was scoreless for 6:23 before Jordan King hit 1-2 free throws with 2:24 left (49-46).
• Grace Efosa was fouled on a hard take to the basket with 1:11 on the clock and sank both foul shots to inch within one (49-48).
• Providence forced a turnover and Sheppard drilled a three on the other end to give Providence its first lead of the game with 43.7-seconds left (51-49).
• Jordan King got an off-balance desperation three to go down with the shot clock expiring to put her squad back on top (52-51) with 14-seconds to go. The Golden Eagles had scored just three points in the quarter to that point.
• Providence called timeout to advance the ball and draw up a final play. Marquette fouled Crooms, but it only marked the fourth team foul of the quarter.
• The Friars called timeout with 8.8-ticks on the clock, but Sheppard's lay-up and a put-back try by Efosa were off the mark.
• Marquette held on for the 52-51 win.
NOTES:
• Scott and Crooms paced the Friars' offense with 11 points each.
• Crooms added a team-high eight rebounds and dished two assists.
• Sheppard tallied nine points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
• Olivia Olsen contributed seven points, five boards, two steals and two block shots.
• Marotta finished the game with 25 points, while King added 15 for Marquette. Only four players cracked the scoring column for the Golden Eagles overall.
• Providence outscored Marquette 14-4 in points off turnovers and 16-2 in second-chance points.
• Providence has suffered back-to-back one-point losses at home.
UP NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Saturday, Feb. 18 against DePaul. The game is scheduled to be played at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. and will tip-off at 12:00 p.m.
• Providence hits the road for back-to-back games against Georgetown (Feb. 21) and Villanova (Feb. 24) before hosting St. John's in the regular-season finale on Monday, Feb. 27. The Friars' game against the Red Storm will serve as the program's annual senior day.
