CONSHOHOCKEN, PA. – The Providence College field hockey team fell to Villanova, 4-3, on Friday, Oct. 27 at the Proving Grounds in Conshohocken, Pa. The result decided the fourth and final spot for the BIG EAST Tournament, with the Wildcats advancing. Conversely, the Friars were eliminated from contention. The Friars dropped to 10-7 overall (3-4 BIG EAST), while the Wildcats improved to 9-8 (4-3 BIG EAST).
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars scored on their first shot attempt of the game as
Celia Preveza tipped in a feed from
Ally DeCoste just 2:43 into the action.
• The Wildcats answered to tie the game, 1-1, four minutes later (6:45) as Sabine de Ruijter redirected a pass from Anne Drabbe.
• Villanova outshot Providence 5-2, while both teams were tied 2-2 in shots on goal.
• The Wildcats held a 4-0 advantage in penalty corners.
2ND QUARTER:
• Villanova took the lead (2-1) as Amanda Middleman carried the ball into the circle and passed to the right post, where De Ruijter tipped it in. The goal came 1:48 into the second quarter.
• Gemma Lysaght made it a 3-1 game during a penalty corner at the 20:42 mark. Her initial shot was blocked by
Ally DeCoste, but she collected the ball and attempted a second shot that cleared the goal line at the right post.
• The Wildcats maintained their two-goal lead into halftime.
• In the second quarter, Villanova held the lead in shots (10-2), shots on goal (6-0) and corners (5-1).
3RD QUARTER:
• The Friars came out of the gates quick, scoring two goals inside the first four minutes of play to tie the match, 3-3.
• The Friars cut the deficit to one (3-2) just 1:43 into the third as
Florencia Talarico carried the ball into the left side of the circle and fired a backhand shot into the right side of the cage. It marked her second goal of the season.
• DeCoste tied the game at 38:19 as she collected a pass from Preveza inside the circle and turned and fired for her ninth goal of the year.
• Providence outshot Villanova 6-0 during the third frame, putting three of those attempts on target.
• The Friars also held a 2-0 edge in corners.
• The two teams went into the final 15 minutes of regulation tied, 3-3.
4TH QUARTER:
• Lysaght scored her second goal of the evening at the 55:15 mark during a penalty corner opportunity, assisted by Emma Schwarz.
• The Friars pulled
Asia Porter from goal at 56:13 in favor of the extra attacker, but were unable to get the equalizer in the final 4:47 of regulation.
• The Wildcats outshot the Friars 5-1 in the final quarter and held a 3-1 edge in corners.
NOTES:
• For the game, Villanova led in shots (20-11) and corners (12-4).
• Porter collected six saves for the Friars in the cage.

• The Friars will face La Salle in the season finale on Sunday, Oct. 29. The match is slated to begin at Noon and will be played at the Proving Grounds in Conshohocken, Pa.
