Field Hockey Tops UConn In Double-Overtime, 2-1

Florencia Talarico scored her first career goal 3:58 into the second overtime session to win it.

STORRS, CONN. – The Providence College field hockey team defeated UConn, 2-1, in double-overtime on Friday, Oct. 13 in Storrs, Conn. Freshman midfielder Florencia Talarico scored the game winner 3:58 into the second overtime period, marking her first collegiate goal. The Friars earned their first win over UConn since 2006, and their first victoy over the Huskies in Storrs, Conn. since 1992.
 
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars earned the first corner attempt of the game for either team with 2:22 left in the first quarter. Providence was unable to get a clean look at the cage on the play.
• Providence held a 3-2 edge in shots and also led in penalty corners, 1-0. 
• After the opening 15 minutes of play, the game was a scoreless tie (0-0).
 
2ND QUARTER:
• UConn got out of the gates quickly in the second quarter, scoring just 17-seconds into the action. Sol Simone was credited with the goal.
• Providence outshot UConn 4-3 in the second quarter and held a 3-0 advantage in penalty corners. 
• Two of the Friars' offensive corners came in the closing seconds of the half.
• UConn carried a 1-0 lead into the break.
• Through 30 minutes of action, Providence led in shots (7-5) and penalty corners (4-0). UConn held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence leveled the game, 1-1, at the 33:29 mark as Eleonore de Keyser converted on a penalty corner. 
• It marked the first shot attempt of the third quarter for either team and the Friars' fifth quarter of the match.
• UConn was awarded its first penalty corner opportunity with 7:26 remaining in the frame. The Huskies shot attempt on the play sailed left of the cage.
Bella Carrozza was assessed a yellow card with 5:05 remaining in the third quarter, leaving the Friars down a player for the remainder of the quarter.
• The Huskies had a goal called back just a minute later, as the score remained tied (1-1).
• Providence held steady in the closing minutes and the two teams went to the final frame knotted at 1-1.
 
4TH QUARTER:
Asia Porter made back-to-back saves with just under eight minutes left in regulation to keep the game level.
• Providence's defense withstood heavy offensive pressure from the Huskies late in the fourth quarter and eventually got the ball downfield for a penalty corner opportunity with 56-seconds left.
• De Keysers sweep to the right post was deflected wide and the two teams went to overtime.
 
OVERTIME:
• UConn had the better of the play in the first overtime and recorded a 4-0 advantage in shots and 3-0 edge in corners.
• In the second overtime, UConn challenged early to record the win, but Providence's defense held firm.
Ally DeCoste's interception of a pass through the middle of the field led to a break out opportunity for the Friars. 
• A UConn foul created a restart for the Friars outside the circle. Talarico restarted the play and carried the ball into the top left of the circle and fired a back-handed shot into the upper right hand corner of the cage for the win.
• The game-winning goal came at 73:58 and was unassisted.


 
NOTES:
• The Friars defeated the Huskies for the first time since the 2006 regular-season finale. 
• It marked the first Providence victory over UConn in Storrs, Conn. since 1992. That game also was decided in overtime (3-2).
• Providence improved to 1-1 this season in overtime games.
• The Friars picked up their first road victory of the season. The team was 0-3 away from home heading into the game, including an 0-1 mark on a neutral surface.
• Talarico's game winner marked her first collegiate goal. She has scored at least one point in each of the last three games and was most recently named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Oct. 10.
Asia Porter finished the game with 11 saves, marking her second-highest save total of the season.
• UConn held the advantage in shots during the game (15-12), including a 12-6 edge in shots on goal. 
• The Friars led in penalty corners, 8-6.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 15 against Lafayette. The match will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the game, the program will honor its seniors and graduate students.
