Women’s Hockey Prepares For Home-And-Home Series Against No.8 Quinnipiac

The Friars are currently 0-2-0 to start the season.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.– Providence will face No.8 Quinnipiac University in a home-and-home series this weekend. The Friars will travel to Hamden, Conn. on Friday, Oct. 13 for a 6:00 p.m. puck drop before hosting the Bobcats at Schneider Arena on Saturday, Oct. 14 for a 3:00 p.m. start.
 
Scouting the Friars
The Friars opened the 2023-24 season in Canton, N.Y. against St. Lawrence University. On Friday, Oct. 6 the Friars took a 7-2 loss followed by a 2-0 loss on Saturday, Oct. 7. Hope Walinski (Lincoln, R.I.) was between the pipes on Oct. 6 where she had 33 total saves. Mireille Kingsley (Sudbury, Ontario) was the net minder on Oct. 7 where she held a .952 save percentage, 1.03 goals against average and 20 saves. Ashley Clark (North Weymouth, Mass.) leads the Friars in points after scoring one goal and earning an assist during Friday's game.
 
The Friars finished the 2022-23 season with a 22-11-4 overall record, including a 15-8-4 mark in Hockey East play.
 
Providence returns offensive threat Reichen Kirchmair (Oakville, Ontario) who made the Hockey East All-Rookie Team after recording 11 goals and 11 assists for 22 points in her freshman season. Rachel Weiss (Calgary, Alberta) also returns to the lineup. Weiss posted nine goals and ten assists for 19 points.
 
The Friars return top defensemen Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine) and Brooke Becker (Orchard Park, N.Y.). DeBlois totaled six goals, 14 assists and 49 blocks and was named to the All-Hockey East Second Team. Becker recorded three goals, 13 assists and 32 blocks last season.
 
In net, Hope Walinski (Lincoln, R.I.) returns for Providence. Walinski made her first collegiate appearance in February of last season. Walinski started in between the pipes for the final four games of the 2022-23 season and amassed a 1.76 goals against average, .944 save percentage and 3-1-0 record.
 
Hockey East Preseason Poll
The Friars were picked to finish third in the Hockey East Preseason Poll, which was released on Tuesday, Sept. 12. The Friars, who received 74 points, were picked to finish behind Northeastern (88) and Vermont (75). The Huskies, who won the 2023 Hockey East Tournament, received eight first place votes.
 
Rounding out the poll was UConn (65), Boston University (59), Boston College (58), Maine (38), New Hampshire (35), Merrimack (28) and Holy Cross (20).
 
Fresh Friar Faces
Providence welcomes nine new players (two transfers and six freshmen) to the roster for the 2023-24 season. Grace Shirley (Saskatchewan, Canada) is a graduate student from University of Wisconsin and Hannah Johnson (Readfield, Maine) a junior from Syracuse University. The six freshmen are Audrey Knap (Stevens Point, Wis.), Kiara Kraft (Churchville, N.Y.), Peyton Blaney (Millgrove, Ontario), Dylan Berman (Deephaven, Minn.), Taylor Gilmour (Napanee, Ontario) and Taya Currie (Parkhill, Ontario).
 
Captains Named
Graduate student Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine) and senior Rachel Weiss (Calgary, Alberta) were named captains for the 2023-24 season, along with alternate captains Lindsay Bochna (Toronto, Ontario) and Lily Hendrikson (Edina, Minn.).
 
Scouting the Bobcats
The Bobcats enter the weekend at 4-0-0 (0-0-0 ECAC). Last weekend, the Bobcats defeated New Hampshire 3-2 on Oct. 6 and 4-1 on Oct. 7.
 
Who to Watch
Sadie Peart leads the Bobcats in points with three goals and three assists. Following Peart in points is Kendall Cooper with two goals and three assists
 
Goaltender Logan Angers has started in all four games for the Bobcats this season. Angers has recorded 94 saves this season for a .959 save percentage and a 0.99 GAA.
 
All-Time Series with the Bobcats
Providence leads the all-time series record against Quinnipiac, 10-3-2. Their last matchup on Dec. 9 and 10 of 2022, ended in a split. The Friars lost 3-2 on Dec. 9, then won 3-2 on Dec. 10.
