No.13 Women’s Hockey Travels To Boston University For A Mid-Week Matchup

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The No.13 Friars will face the Boston University Terriers on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at 7:00 p.m. at the Walter Brown Arena in Boston, Mass.

Scouting the Friars
The Friars are currently 17-8-1 overall and 12-6-1 in Hockey East play. The Friars were shutout by the University of Vermont, 3-0, on Friday, Jan. 13. On Saturday, Jan. 14 the Friars defeated the Merrimack Warriors, 5-2.
 
Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) finished the weekend with 32 saves and currently holds a .936 save percentage with a 1.62 GAA this season. Ashley Clark (North Weymouth, Mass.), Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden), Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine), Hunter Barnett (Caledon, Ontario), and Rachel Weiss (Calgary, Alberta) each scored a goal in the final period of Saturday's game against Merrimack. Reichen Kirchmair (Oakville, Ontario) tallied the most points with two assists. Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) finished the weekend with 32 saves.

As of Jan. 16, the Friars are ranked No.13 in the most recent USCHO NCAA Women's Hockey rankings. Providence received 70 votes.
 
Hockey East Award Winners
Claire Tyo was named Hockey East Defender of the Week as announced on Dec. 12 for tallying three assists in a single game on Dec. 10.

Sara Hjalmarsson was named Hockey East Player of the Week as announced on Nov. 21. Hjalmarsson was recognized for having a four-goal game against Maine on Nov. 19.
 
Abstreiter was named Hockey East Stop It Goaltender of the Week as announced on Nov. 21. Abstreiter was recognized for tallying her sixth shutout this season and 63 saves over the weekend.
 
Kirchmair was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Month as announced on Nov. 2. Kirchmair was recognized for leading the Friars in goals with seven and leading all of Hockey East in goals among freshman.
 
Kirchmair was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week as announced on Oct. 24. Kirchmair was recognized for earning two goals over the weekend. She has recorded seven goals and two assists across eight season games. She leads the Friars in goals and is second in points with nine.
 
Abstreiter was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Week as announced on Oct. 17. Abstreiter was recognized for another shutout weekend against Holy Cross. With a combined 25 saves she is the first goalie in program history to tally four-consecutive shutouts.
 
Abstreiter was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Week as announced on Oct. 10. Abstreiter was recognized after a shutout weekend over Union College and RPI, posting a combined 35 saves.
 
Hockey East Preseason Poll
The Friars were picked to finish fourth in the Hockey East Preseason Poll, which was released on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Providence received 61 points and was picked to finish behind Northeastern (90), Vermont (79) and Boston College (76). The Huskies, who won the 2022 Hockey East Tournament, received nine first place votes.
 
Fresh Friar Faces
Providence welcomes seven new players (three transfers and four freshmen) to the roster for the 2022-23 season. Noemi Neubauerova (Prague, Czech Republic) is a graduate student from Colgate University. Ida Press (Uppsala, Sweden) is a graduate student from University of Maine. Rachel Weiss (Calgary, Alberta) is a junior from Penn State. The four freshmen are Mégane Quirion (Saint-Eustache, Quebec), Kayla Kutes (Kirkland, Wa.), Reichen Kirchmair (Oakville, Ontario) and Cristina Cavaliere (Mississauga, Ontario).
 
Captains Named
Graduate student Caroline Peterson (East Falmouth, Mass.) was named captain for the 2022-23 season, along with alternate captains Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) a graduate student, senior Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine), and graduate student Hunter Barnett (Caledon, Ontario).
 
Scouting the Terriers
Boston University currently holds a 7-15-0 overall record with a 6-12-0 Hockey East record. The Terriers last faced the Holy Cross Crusaders on Friday, Jan. 13 when they lost, 2-1, in overtime. As a team, Boston University averages 25.3 shots per game and hold a .150 conversion rate on power plays with a 45.9 faceoff success percentage.
 
Who to Watch
Senior Julia Nearis leads the Terriers in total points and goals with 15 and seven, respectively. Junior Lacey Martin leads the team in assists with nine.
 
Graduate student goaltender Andrea Brändli has played in 15 games for the Terriers this season. Brändli has recorded 400 saves this season for a .932 save percentage and a 2.31 GAA.

All Time Series with the Terriers
Providence currently leads the all-time series record against Boston University 35-30-4. The last time the Friars faced off against the Terriers was in November 2022. The Friars swept the Terriers with a 3-2 win on Nov. 4 and 4-1 win on Nov. 5.
