Providence College Falls To Marquette On The Road, 80-57

MILWAUKEE, WIS. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Marquette, 80-57, in BIG EAST play on Jan. 14 at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee, Wis. Providence dropped to 11-8 overall (2-6 BIG EAST), while the Golden Eagles improved to 11-6 and evened their record in the league at 4-4.
1ST QUARTER:
• The Golden Eagles mounted an 8-2 lead to force a Friars timeout (5:29).
• The score remained unchanged until Jordan King converted a traditional three-point play for Marquette with 2:55 left on the clock (11-2).
• Kylee Sheppard ended a five-minute scoring drought for the Friars with a strong drive to the hoop at the 2:25 mark.
• Olivia Olsen closed the quarter with a lay-up on the left block to get Providence within five at the intermission (11-6).
• Marquette was scoreless during the final 2:55 of the quarter.
2ND QUARTER:
• The Friars trailed 23-13 at the media timeout (23-13).
• Marquette pushed out to a 13 point advantage with 2:01 to play, but Audrey Koch drained a three from the left wing to make the score 23-13.
• The Golden Eagles closed the quarter with a 5-2 scoring edge to take a 37-24 lead into halftime.
• Janai Crooms paced the Friars with nine points in the first half, while Jordan King netted 17 points for Marquette.
• Providence committed 14 first-half turnovers and Marquette recorded 11 miscues. The Golden Eagles posted an 8-2 advantage in points off turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.
3RD QUARTER:
• The Friars opened the third with an 11-6 run, including a 6-0 spurt that forced a Marquette timeout with 6:39 on the clock. The run got the Friars within single digits (43-35).
• Sheppard knocked down a three in transition to make it a six-point game (45-39) with 5:45 on the clock.
• The Golden Eagles finished the quarter with a 13-1 run to claim a 58-40 lead heading into the fourth.
4TH QUARTER:
• The Golden Eagles got out to an 18-point lead with 8:05 on the clock as Rose Nkumu recorded a three-point play (63-45).
• Providence closed the deficit to as little as 13, but Marquette responded with a 12-4 run to force a timeout (75-54).
• The Golden Eagles outscored the Friars 22-17 in the fourth quarter overall en route to their 80-57 victory.
NOTES:
• Crooms finished the day with a team-best 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.
• Sheppard added 14 points, five rebounds and two assists.
• Olsen contributed 13 points, six boards and two blocked shots.
• King paced Marquette with 31 points and five assists.
UP NEXT:
• Providence returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 18 against Butler. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. Upon completion of that game, the Friars will play seven of their remaining regular-season games at home in Alumni Hall. The closing stretch begins with back-to-back home games against Georgetown (Jan. 21) and Creighton (Jan 24).
