Women's Basketball Cruises To 64-50 Win Over Xavier

Grace Efosa tallied a game-high 17 points; Olivia Olsen recorded her second-straight double-double with 13 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Xavier, 64-50, on Jan. 11 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 11-7 (2-5 BIG EAST), while Xavier dropped to 7-10 (0-8 BIG EAST).
1ST QUARTER:
• Brynn Farrell got the scoring going in the game with her team-best 28th three-pointer of the season.
• Xavier answered with five-straight points, before Grace Efosa scored in transition and converted a traditional three-point play at the foul line with 6:22 on the clock.
• The bucket sparked a 6-0 run to give Providence a 9-5 advantage midway through the quarter.
• The Friars went scoreless for nearly three minutes before Nariah Scott hit a pull-up jumper in paint (11-8) with 2:18 to play.
• Farrell hit her second three of the day as time expired to give Providence a 14-10 lead at the intermission. She finished the quarter with eight points.
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence outscored Xavier 12-1 through the opening 5:36 of the second to take a 26-11 lead.
• Xavier was scoreless for a span of just over five minutes until Kaysia Woods got a friendly bounce on a three-pointer from the left wing at the 2:36 mark. It sparked a 9-2 run to get the Musketeers within eight (28-20).
• Providence closed the half with four unanswered points to claim a 32-20 lead at the half.
• Efosa paced the Friars with nine first-half points, while Farrell and Olsen each tallied eight.
• The Providence defense held Xavier to 27-percent shooting from the field in the first half (7-26), while the Friars shot 41-percent (12-29).
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence's lead ballooned to 22 with a 12-2 scoring advantage to start the quarter (4:23).
• Woods hit her second triple of the day to get Xavier back on the board at the 3:39 mark (44-25).
• Providence went scoreless for a span of 2:35 before Scott sank a free throw for Providence with 12-seconds left (47-27).
• Mackayla Scarlett converted a jumper from the left wing as time expired and the Friars took a 47-29 lead into the fourth quarter.
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence outscored the Musketeers 7-5 through the first 3:15 of the quarter and held a 54-34 edge at the media timeout.
• Xavier completed the final 2:35 of the game on an 8-1 run and the Friars claimed a 64-50 victory.
NOTES:
• Efosa paced four Friars in double figures with 17 points. She shot 4-7 from the field and 9-11 from the foul line and added six rebounds and one assist.
• Olsen notched her second-straight double-double with 13 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. She also grabbed three steals and swatted a career-high six shots.
• Olsen has recorded double figures in the scoring column in seven of the last eight games, including five-straight.
• Janai Crooms contributed a solid stat line with 11 points, four rebounds, four assists, three blocked shots and two steals.
• Farrell rounded out the list of double-digit scorers with 10 points.
• Providence finished the day with 10 blocked shots as a team. The last time the Friars recorded double-digit blocks was exactly one year ago against Xavier (11) on Jan. 11, 2022.
• The Friars won the glass with a 43-30 rebounding advantage and also dominated the paint with a 32-16 scoring advantage.
• Providence held Xavier below 30-percent from the field on the day (.298, 17-57). The Friars are 10-1 this season when holding their opponent below 40-percent from the field.
