PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's and women's cross-country teams open the season on Friday, Sep. 9 at the Friar Invitational on the Mark Coogan Course at Highland Park in Attleboro, Mass. It will commence with the women's race at 3:15pm, followed by the men's race at 4:00pm. The Friar women will race against Stonybrook, New Hampshire, Xavier, and UCONN. The Friar men will face Stonybrook, New Hampshire, Xavier, URI, and Brown.
Junior
Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland) will be one of the top returners for the Friars this season. Mooney finished ninth at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships on Oct. 29, 2021 in a time of 21:08.6. At the 2021 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, Mooney placed 60
th (20:13.1) which led the Friars to a 26
th place finish. Junior
Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) had an impressive sophomore season for the Friars after earning her second All-BIG EAST accolade for her 17
th place finish (21:31.0) at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships. Flockhart also placed top 10 at the NCAA Division 1 Northeast Region Cross Country Championships. Senior
Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) has earned three All-BIG EAST Cross Country accolades during her time at Providence. Most recently when she placed 16
th at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships (21:26.6). Sophomore
Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand), senior
Alex O'Neill (Quin, Ireland) and graduate student
Orla O'Connor (Waterford, Ireland) are expected to help place the Friars this season. Sophomore transfer
Niamh O'Mahony (Kerry, Ireland) will also feature for the Friars.
Graduate student
Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass) returns for a fifth year after another successful season as a Friar. Rocha finished fourth at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships on Oct. 29, 2021 in a time of 24:22.7. Rocha also represented the Friars as an individual qualifier at the 2021 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida, where he placed 61st in a time of 29:25.8. David McGlynn (Waterford, Ireland) and graduate transfer
David Principe, Jr. (Johnston, RI). Junior
Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand) earned All-BIG EAST honors for his eighth-place finish at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships (24:32.2). Back also placed 19
th (30:52.3) at the NCAA Division I Northeast Region Cross Country Championships, helping the Friars secure a fourth place finish. Sophomore
Abdel Laadjel (Lucan, Ireland) and juniors
Pat Thygesen (Brisbane, Australia) and
Shane Coffey (Naas, Ireland) will assist in keeping the Friars competitive this season.
After the Friar Invitational, the men's and women's teams will return to action on Friday, September 30 at the Lehigh Paul Short Invite in Bethlehem, PA.
