PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Friar Invitational today (Sept. 9) at the Mark Coogan Course at Highland Park in Attleboro, Mass. Senior Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) won the women's race in a time of 17:16.42 and led the team to a first-place finish over four other teams. Junior Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand) came in third, leading the men's team (24:40.84) to a second-place finish over five other squads.
"The women ran really well," Friar Coach Ray Treacy said. "Lilly was about 40 seconds faster than she was last year on this course. Shannon was very solid. It was a great start for Niamh. We were missing three runners today that we will be able to add in for Lehigh in three weeks."
Led by Tuck, the Providence women's team scored 23 points and defeated Connecticut (49 points), Stony Brook (68 points), Xavier (107 points), and New Hampshire (115 points). Other Friars who scored on the women's side were junior Shannon Flockhart of Longstanton, England (second, 17:30.46), junior Laura Mooney of Cappincur, Ireland (fourth, 17:49.54), Niamh O'Mahony of Kerry, Ireland (fifth, 17:50.36), and Halle Atkinson of Franklin, Mass. (11th, 18:28.88).
"I thought our guys were a little bit too aggressive at the start of the race and it hurt us at the end - lesson learned from that," Coach Ray Treacy said. "We have some work to do over the next three weeks."
Finishing second overall, the Providence men's team scored 37 points. Stony Brook finished first with 19 points. Teams finishing behind the Friars were, Xavier (102 points), Rhode Island (104 points), Brown (110 points), and New Hampshire (148 points). Finishing second for the Friars was sophomore Michael Morgan of Sligo, Ireland (sixth, 24:53.40). Other Friars who scored for the men's team include graduate student David McGlynn of Waterford, Ireland (eighth, 24:59.29), junior Shane Coffey of Naas, Ireland (ninth, 25:03.97), and graduate student David Prinicipe, Jr. of Johnston, R.I. (11th, 25:07.78).
The Friar men's and women's teams will return to action on Friday, September 30 at the Lehigh Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, PA beginning at 3:15 p.m.
