Men’s Soccer Welcomes Seton Hall For BIG EAST Home Opener

Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Providence College men's soccer team is set to host Seton Hall on Sept. 24 at 6:00 p.m. on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium for its BIG EAST home opener.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS… The Friars are looking to get back in the win column as they return home after a 1-1 tie at Villanova on Sept. 17. Providence is 1-1 in their last two games played on Chapey Field. On Sept. 10, the Friars fell to Brown, 1-0. On Sept. 13, Providence defeated New Hampshire, 1-0. Gil Santos (Parede, Portugal) scored his first goal of the to lift the Friars to victory. In Providence's most recent game, Brian Lopez (Hialeah, Fla.) scored the equalizer against Villanova, marking his first collegiate goal.
 
The Friars have had seven different players score in their first seven games. Junior Gevork Diarbian (Cranston, R.I.) and sophomore Thomas Tulgar (Bergenfield, N.J.) have each scored two goals and one assist to lead the team with five points. In addition to Diarbian, Tulgar, Santos and Lopez, junior Brendan McSorley (Randolph, N.J.) and graduate students Nick Benjamin (Stonington, Conn.) and Ramzi Qawasmy (Lansdale, Pa.) have also scored for the Friars. Luis Garcia (Gran Canaria, Spain) leads the team in assists with three.
  
FRIARS PICKED FIRST IN BIG EAST PRESEASON POLL… The BIG EAST Conference announced its 2022 Men's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll on Wednesday, Aug. 17. The Friars were picked to finish first in the BIG EAST with Ramzi QawasmyLuis Garcia and Gevork Diarbian earning selections for the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Qawasmy was also selected as a Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Qawasmy, Garcia and Diarbian also landed spots on the United Soccer Coaches Players to Watch Lists for Defenders, Midfielders and Forwards, respectively.
 
NEWCOMERS… Nick Benjamin has made an immediate impact for the Friars in the non-conference schedule. He's notched four points so far this season on one goal and two assists. Benjamin scored the first goal of the season, and his first goal in a Friar uniform, in the season-opener against Colgate. In the 4-0 shutout against Siena, Benjamin was responsible for two assists on goals by McSorley and Tulgar. Tomas Magnusson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland) has also been a factor for the Friars after logging 228 minutes in Providence's last three games. Lopez is averaging 26.57 minutes of action per game.

SCOUTING THE PIRATES… Seton Hall enters Saturday's game with a 3-1-3 overall record after opening BIG EAST play with a draw against No. 24 Xavier on Sept. 17 (2-2). The Pirates were selected to finish 10th in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll.
 
Junior Quenzi Huerman has started all seven games and leads the Pirates with eight points on three goals and two assists. Graduate student Luca Dahn has been selected as BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and also has been featured on the league's weekly honor roll this season. Two other Pirates have been selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, including goalie Hannas Ronnholmen, who ranks fifth in the conference in saves (19) and defender Johannes Pex, who has three goals for six points on the season.
 
WHAT'S NEXT… The Friars will travel to Chicago, Ill. to face the DePaul Blue Demons on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 2:00 p.m. (ET) before taking on Connecticut at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn. on Wednesday, Oct. 5.
