Volleyball Kicks Off 2022 Campaign At Iona Gaels Tournament

The Friars’ first match is set for 12:00 p.m. on Aug. 26 against Central Connecticut State University.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College volleyball team will begin its 2022 season at Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y. at the Iona Gaels Tournament on Aug. 26-27. The Friars open the tournament on Aug. 26 against Central Connecticut State at 12:00 p.m., and will face Iona later in the day at 6:00 p.m. On Aug. 27, Providence will play a single match against Holy Cross at 2:30 p.m.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS… Providence finished the 2021 season with a 16-15 overall record and a 4-14 record in the BIG EAST Conference. The Friars are returning 13 players along with the addition of two newcomers. The Friars will be led by graduate student Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.), along with seniors Jennifer Leitman (Irvine, Calif.), Sasha Rudich (Austin, Texas) and Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) and sophomore Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas). Taylor returns for her final year after finishing first on the team in digs (371) with 36 serve aces. Leitman, Rudich and Nelson are all looking to build off of successful junior seasons, recording 172, 143 and 131 kills, respectfully. A 2022 All-BIG EAST Preseason team honoree and 2021 All-BIG EAST Freshman Team selection, Rhoden returns for her sophomore year after leading the Friars and ranking eighth in the BIG EAST in kills, with 359 (3.21 kills/set).
 
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS… The Blue Devils finished their 2021 season with a 9-17 overall record and a 6-8 conference mark in the Northeast Conference. Three key players are returning for Central Connecticut. Nyjha Marcelin, who earned all-NEC Second Team honors is among the group of returners which also includes Natalie Novak and Isabelle Roufs, who had 410 assists and 189 kills on the season, respectively.
 
SCOUTING THE GAELS…The Gaels recorded a 10-18 overall record with an 8-10 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Iona returns two of its top attackers, Jen Soto and Nerin Valasakos. Soto recorded 186 kills and a team-high 46 total blocks on the season. Valasakos added 124 kills. Hope Matschner also returns after leading the team in digs (375) during the 2021 season.
 
SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS…The Crusaders recorded a 2-25 overall record with a 1-15 mark in the Patriot League. Holy Cross returns several key players. Gracyn Benck and Abbie Lane return after recording 229 and 207 kills on the season, respectfully. Halle Carter, the team leader in assists (598) also returns for her junior year.
 
WHAT'S NEXT… The Providence College volleyball team will be on the road again next weekend for the UTA Classic at the University of Texas Arlington in Arlington, Texas. The Friars will face off against Texas A&M University-Commerce on Friday, Sept. 2 at 12:00 p.m. (ET) before their match against University of North Texas later that afternoon (5:00 p.m. ET). Providence will play host UT Arlington on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 12:00 p.m. (ET).
