2022 Friars Outdoor Track NCAA Prelim Qualifiers

Men’s And Women’s Track Preview For NCAA East Preliminary

Ten Friar athletes will run on May 25-28 in Bloomington, Ind.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track East Preliminary competitions are scheduled for May 25 – 28 at Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind.  The Providence College men's and women's track program has a record 10 athletes (five men, five women) qualified for the East Preliminaries in Bloomington, Ind.

The runners will attempt to qualify for the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 8-11 in Eugene, Oregon.
The 10 Friars that have qualified are:

Sophomore Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand) - Back set a facility record at the Friar Invitational (3:59.06) in the mile on April 8, which converts to 3:41.35 for the 1,500 meters.  He continued his great form by placing second at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships in the 5,000 meters (14:17.50) on May 14 in hot conditions. 

Graduate Student AJ Ernst (Marblehead, Mass.) - After recovering from an injury during the indoor season, Ernst opened his outdoor season with a strong time of 3:41.99 in the 1,500 meters at the Raleigh Relays on March 24.  This time gave him an early spot in the top-48 for the first round of the NCAAs.  He continued his strong season with a win at the Penn Relays in the 1,500 meters (3:46.01) on April 28. Ernst will be looking to return to the NCAA Finals after he qualified last season. 

Graduate Student Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand) – White posted a top-3 finish in the mile at the Friar Invitational as he cruised to a speedy time of 4:00.80, which converts to a 3:42.96 1,500 meters (his qualifying mark). He improved throughout the season placing fifth (3:46.82) in the heats in the 1,500 meters at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships on May 14.

Graduate Student David McGlynn (Waterford, Ireland) - McGlynn was an early qualifier as he earned his regional time in the Raleigh Relays on May 25. McGlynn placed 22nd in the 10,000 meters in a time of 29:04.92. He continued his season with a sub-14 5,000 meters at the Friar invitational (13:59.83) placing him third on April 8.

Sophomore Pat Thygesen (Brisbane, Australia) - Thygesen has showed his range throughout the season competing in the 1,500 meters, 5,000 meters and the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He placed second (8:54.07) in the steeplechase at the Friar Invitational (April 8).  He also placed second (8:49.36) in the steeplechase again at the Penn Relays on April 28 and earned another second-place finish (8:51.81) at the BIG EAST Championships on May 14. 

Sophomore Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) - Flockhart won both the BIG EAST Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the 1,500 meters. She raced to a second-place finish (4:39.14) at the Friar Invitational, which earned her a spot in Bloomington.

Freshman Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand) - May finished fourth (4:41.44) in the mile at the Friar Invitational on April 8, which converts to a 4:20.59 1,500 meter (her qualifying mark). She placed second (4:24.65), behind Flockhart, in the 1,500 meters at the Big East Outdoor Championships on May 13.

Junior Alex O'Neill (Ennis, Ireland) - O'Neill won the 800 meters at the Friar Invitational (2:07.41) on April 8 and won the 800 at the Brown Springtime Invitational on May 1 in a time of 2:06.07.

Sophomore Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland) ran the 10,000 meters at the Raleigh Relays on March 24 and placed second (33:23.95), which earned her a spot in the first round of the NCAA'S.

Junior Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) - Tuck opened her season in the 5,000 meters as she placed 14th (16:02.34) at the Raleigh Relays on March 24. She has been consistent throughout the season and continued her solid form as she won the BIG EAST 10,000-meter title (35:17.98).
