The Friars are set for single Hockey East matchup against Merrimack College this Tuesday, Feb. 8. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena.
Last Time Out
In this past weekends series against Holy Cross, Providence saw two overtime victories against the Crusaders, both resulting in a 3-2 win.
In Saturdays game at Schneider Arena, Holy Cross scored early in the first period and held a 1-0 lead until the 5:48 mark of the third period when
Caroline Peterson (East Falmouth, Mass.) put the Friars on the board, 1-1, on the power play. Peterson was assisted by
Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine) and
Lily Hendrikson (Edina, Minn.). The Crusaders took back the lead, 2-1, just 57 seconds later on their own power play, after Peterson was sent to the box for tripping. Peterson evened things out for the Friars, 2-2, in the final 5:06 of play.
Hunter Barnett (Caledon, Ontario) and
Lily Martinson (Allen, Texas) assisted Peterson on her fifth goal in the past three games.
Lindsay Bochna (Toronto, Ontario) scored for the Friars in overtime, with just 28 seconds to spare in extra time. Bochna scored unassisted, on the breakaway, for her seventh goal of the season, a team-high.
Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) finished the game with 27 saves.
On Sunday, Holy Cross found the back of the net first again, 1-0, with a shorthanded goal at 11:47 of the first.
Isabelle Hardy (Oakville, Ontario) found the equalizer for the Friars, 1-1, with 3:39 remaining the second period. Assisted by
Hayley Lunny (Bedford, N.Y.), the goal served as Hardy's first of the season. Hardy found the back of the net again just 2:20 later to grab a 2-1 lead for the Friars heading into the third.
Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine) and Lunny earned the assists on the play. The Crusaders evened things up, 2-2, by a goal from Sofia Smithson with 6:52 remaining in play. Neither team was able to score in the final minutes and the teams entered overtime for their second consecutive game.
Hunter Barnett (Caledon, Ontario) netted the game-winner in overtime, 3-2, off of a turnover at the 1:22 mark to secure a win for the Friars and complete a sweep in the three-game season series against the Crusaders.
Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) finished with 38 saves. The Friars outshot the Crusaders, 44-40.
Scouting the Friars
The Friars are currently 11-12-5 overall and 7-11-2 in Hockey East.
Lunny leads the charge offensively for the Friars with 17 points (six goals, 11 assists). Bochna is second. She's tallied seven goals and nine assists for 16 points. Peterson leads the team in goals (nine) and has scored five for the Friars in the past four games. Providence has 19 different players in the line-up with at least a point. Eighteen different players have posted an assists, while sixteen players have found the back of the net.
Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) has made 19 starts in net. She holds a .941 save percentage and a 1.88 goals against average. The netminder has made 576 total saves and has 2 shutouts.
Scouting the Warriors
Merrimack is 5-20-1 overall and 4-16-1 in Hockey East play. The Warriors are a 0-5 loss against Northeastern on Feb. 4.
As a team, Merrimack averages 1.6 goals per game while giving up 3.4. The Warriors convert on 15.3% of power play chances and kill off 79.6% of penalties.
Who to Watch
Teghan Inglis has led the Merrimack attack, registering eight goals and four assists for a team-high 12 points. Katie Kaufman closely trails having tallied eight goals and three assists.
Emma Gorski has dominated time in net for the Warriors. Gorski posted a .894 save percentage and 3.20 goals against average.
