Friars Edged By Marquette On Senior Night, 57-51

Providence will conclude its regular-season schedule at UConn on Sunday, Feb. 27.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Marquette, 57-51, on Friday, Feb. 25 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars dropped to 11-17 overall (6-13 BIG EAST), while Marquette improved to 19-9 (12-7 BIG EAST).
1ST QUARTER:
• The Golden Eagles took a 16-12 lead into the break.
• Marquette held a 10-9 advantage on the boards in the opening quarter, with seven of its rebounds coming off the offensive glass.
• The Golden Eagles outscored the Friars, 6-2, in second-chance points.
• The Friars committed seven miscues in the quarter, which also led to a 7-2 scoring edge for Marquette in points off of turnovers.
• Mary Baskerville recorded six points, five rebounds, two blocked shots and one steal in the opening 10 minutes.
• Liza Karlen paced Marquette with nine points.
2ND QUARTER:
• Lauren Sampson scored five-straight points for Providence in the second quarter to get the Friars within one (18-17) with 6:40 on the clock.
• The Friars extended their run to 12-2 to earn a 24-20 lead with 1:51 remaining on the clock.
• Marquette closed the quarter with a 4-0 spurt to tie the game, 24-24, at halftime.
3RD QUARTER:
• Marquette opened the third quarter with a 10-2 run to claim a 34-26 lead and force a Providence timeout with 6:07 on the clock.
• The Friars locked down on defense and held Marquette scoreless over the next 4:53 while cutting the deficit to two (34-32).
• Marquette took a 40-36 lead into the final quarter.
4TH QUARTER:
• A 7-0 run gave the Friars a 49-47 lead with 3:41 to play in regulation.
• Marquette closed the game with a 10-2 run over the final 3:41 to take the 57-51 victory.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Janai Crooms paced the Friars with 11 points.
• Sampson added 10 points to reach double figures for the second-straight game.
• Baskerville completed the night with eight points, nine rebounds, five steals and two blocked shots.
• Efosa scored nine points for Providence on 4-4 shooting and dished a career-best four assists.
• Providence honored Baskerville and Alyssa Geary prior to the game as the team's only senior members.
• Karlen recorded a double-double on 24 points and 10 rebounds.
• Karissa McLaughlin and Jordan Kings netted 12 points and 10 points, respectively.
• Chole Marotta hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds, including nine offensive boards.
• As a team, Marquette posted a 46-36 advantage on the glass, including 22 offensive rebounds.
