Women's Basketball Drops 88-31 Decision To No. 7/8 Connecticut

Friars will begin BIG EAST Tournament action on Friday, March 4 at Mohegan Sun Arena.

STORRS, CONN. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to No. 7/8 Connecticut, 88-31, on Sunday, Feb. 27 at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn. The Friars concluded the regular-season schedule with an 11-18 overall record (6-14 BIG EAST). The Huskies, who wrapped up the BIG EAST regular-season title last weekend, improved to 22-5 (16-1 BIG EAST).
 
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence took a 4-1 lead with 6:43 left on the clock, but Connecticut answered with a 24-0 run to take an 25-4 lead. 
• The Friars committed eight turnovers during the Huskies' run and shot 0-7 from the field during a scoring drought of 6:43. 
 
2ND QUARTER:
• The Huskies extended their run into the second quarter (29-0) to take a 30-4 edge.
Kylee Sheppard halted the run at the 8:33 mark with a three-pointer from the left wing. It marked the Friars first field goal since the 6:43 mark of the first quarter.
• Connecticut responded with an 11-0 run over the next 3:08 to extend its lead to 41-7.
• Providence was scoreless the final 3:51 of the quarter as UConn mounted a 51-10 lead heading into halftime.
• Sheppard scored seven of the Friars' 10 points in the first half.
• Christyn Williams paced UConn with 13 points, while Olivia Nelson-Ododa added 11 points.
• The Huskies outscored the Friars 19-0 in points off turnovers and 19-0 in second-chance points in the first half. 
 
3RD QUARTER:
Janai Crooms scored 10 of the Friars' 12 points through the first six minutes of play in the third as the teams traded buckets.
• During next 2:06, Connecticut went on an 8-0 run to take a 68-22 lead.
• The Huskies took a 70-23 advantage into the final 10 minutes of play.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence outscored UConn 8-5 through the first 5:09 of the fourth.
• The Huskies closed the game with a 13-0 run to make the final 88-31.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Crooms finished the day with a team-best 12 points.
Olivia Olsen contributed a team-high eight rebounds and added four points.
• Williams paced UConn with 16 points, while Dorka Juhasz recorded a double-double on 14 points and 10 boards.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will begin BIG EAST Tournament action with a first-round game on Friday, March 4 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The BIG EAST will release an official tournament bracket upon completion of all regular-season games on March 1.
