Women's Basketball Falls To Georgetown In BIG EAST First Round, 68-55

Emily Archibald netted a career-high 21 points in the effort.

UNCASVILLE, CONN. – The No. 8 seed Providence Friars fell to No. 9 seed Georgetown, 68-55, in the BIG EAST Tournament First Round on March 4 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The Friars conclude their season with an 11-19 record, while Georgetown improved to 10-18 on the year. The Hoyas will advance to the BIG EAST Quarterfinal to face top-seeded Connecticut on March 5 at Noon.
 
1ST QUARTER:
• Georgetown got out to a 7-2 lead through the first four minutes of action, outscoring the Friars 5-0 in points off of turnovers.
• Providence used an 11-2 run to gain an 13-9 advantage at the intermission.
• Six different Friars scored in the opening quarter. The Providence bench outscore Georgetown, 5-2.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• A 6-2 spurt by the Friars resulted in a six-point lead with 6:29 to play.
• Georgetown used an 8-0 run during a span of 2:15 to tie the game, 23-23, with 1:07 left in the quarter and forced a Providence timeout.
Janai Crooms halted the run on a lay-in out of the timeout, but Graceann Bennett hit a triple on the other end to give the Hoyas a 26-25 lead at halftime.
• Providence missed five of its last six shot attempts during the second quarter and committed six turnovers in the final 4:50 of play to give the Hoyas life.
• Providence was 7-7 from the free throw line in the first half, while Georgetown did not make a trip to the line (0-0).
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Georgetown started the third with a 22-0 run to extend its lead to 23 (48-25).
• The Friars did not score their first bucket until 4:08 left on the clock as Emily Archibald hit a three.
• Providence used a 9-1 run to finish the third, cutting the deficit to 49-34 at the intermission.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence cut the deficit to single digits (55-46) with a 12-6 advantage in scoring to start the fourth. 
• Archibald scored seven of the Friars' 12 points, including a four-point play to force a Georgetown timeout with 5:32 on the clock.
• Providence cut the lead to eight, but the Hoyas answered with five-straight points to push back out to a 13-point advantage (65-52).
• The Hoyas responded down the stretch to take the 68-55 win.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Archibald scored a career-high 21 points on 7-9 shooting from the floor, including an impressive 6-8 performance from beyond the three-point arc.
• Crooms added 18 points, five rebounds, five assists, two steals and one blocked shot.
• The Friars committed a season-high 23 turnovers, which allowed the Hoyas to earn a 31-11 advantage on the scoreboard in points off turnovers.
• The Hoyas also took advantage of a 40-32 edge on the glass, which included 16 offensive boards. Georgetown outscored Providence, 13-2, in second-chance points.
• Milan Bolden-Morris paced four Hoyas in double figures with 18 ponts.
