Friars Fall To St. John's In Overtime, 68-62

Providence returns home to Alumni Hall to host Marquette in final regular-season home game on Feb. 25.
QUEENS, N.Y. – The Friars fought back from a 12-point first half deficit to force overtime against St. John's on Feb. 20, but fell short to the Red Storm at Carnesecca Arena, 68-62.
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars missed their first eight shot attempts from the field while St. John's got out to a 6-0 lead through six minutes of play.
• Nariah Scott got the Friars on the board with a three from the right win for their first bucket of the game at the 4:07 mark (6-3).
• St. John's went on a 6-0 spurt to take a 12-3 lead before Lauren Sampson hit the Friars' second three of the game with 1:05 on the clock (12-6).
• Providence shot 2-14 from the field in the opening 10 minutes (.143), while St. John's checked in with 3-18 shooting (.167).
• Five of the Red Storm's 12 points in the first quarter came from the free throw line (5-6).
2ND QUARTER:
• The Friars opened the second with four-straight points to cut the deficit to 12-10, but St. John's responded with back-to-back threes by Camree Clegg and Daneille Cosgrove to push its lead to eight (18-10) with 7:32 on the clock.
• An 8-0 run by St. John's made it a double-digit game with 3:29 to play in the half (26-14).
• Mary Baskerville halted the run with a pair of free throws (26-16).
• St. John's took a 28-18 advantage into the halftime locker room.
• Leilani Correa led all scorers with 11 points for St. John's.
• Sampson scored a team-high five points for Providence, while Baskerville and Olivia Olsen each recorded four points and five rebounds.
3RD QUARTER:
• The Friars went on an 14-4 run to take a 34-32 lead with 2:51 remaining in the third.
• The two teams traded baskets on each of their next offensive possessions to help the Friars maintain its lead (36-35).
• St. John's closed the scoring with a lay-up by Clegg at the left block and the Red Storm took a 37-36 lead into the break.
• Alyssa Geary scored six points in the quarter (her first points of the game), while Baskerville added five.
• Providence outscored the Red Storm, 18-9, in the third overall.
4TH QUARTER:
• The Friars struck first in the fourth quarter as Sampson sank two free throws to give PC a 38-37 edge, but Clegg and Kadaja Bailey each drained a three to put the Red Storm back on top (43-38) with 7:40 to play.
• Providence erased the deficit with a 6-0 run of its own to tie the game, 44-44. Geary was responsible for four of the six points as she became the first Friar to crack double digits (10).
• The Friars held a 48-47 lead with a chance to make it a two possession game with 58-seconds left, but Correa hauled in a defensive rebound for the Johnnies and got a timeout.
• Danielle Patterson hit a baseline three to put St. John's ahead with 43-seconds left, but Efosa converted two free throws on the Friars' next possession to tie the game (50-50) with 21-seconds remaining.
• The Red Storm called timeout to advance the ball into their offensive end. Bailey took it strong to the hole, but her shot was off the mark. Rayven Peeples grabbed the offensive board and converted the put-back, but the ball didn't come out of her hand before the clock expired.
• The two teams went to overtime tied 50-50.
OVERTIME:
• The two teams traded baskets to open the overtime session, but the Red Storm were able to take the advantage with the help of two three pointers (56-54).
• Clegg pushed St. John's lead to 61-54 as she scored five-straight points with 2:00 left on the clock.
• Geary cashed in on the Friars' next possession to keep Providence within striking distance (61-56).
• St. John's converted 5-6 free throws in the final 42-seconds of OT to take a 68-59 lead.
• Crooms hit a three with seven seconds on the clock to make the final score 68-62.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Crooms paced the Friars with 13 points, while Geary and Sampson each added 12 points.
• Sampson's 12 points marked a career high.
• Crooms also recorded five assists, five rebounds and three steals for the Friars.
• Olsen finished the game with a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with six points, two assists, one steal and one blocked shot.
• Baskerville added nine points and eight rebounds.
• Audrey Koch grabbed a career-high eight rebounds.
• Providence held a 53-51 advantage on the boards. It marked the third time this season that the Friars recorded 50+ rebounds and their 53 boards marked a season high.
• The Friars dropped to 2-2 in overtime games during the 2021-22 season.
