Dominant Fourth-Quarter Effort Leads Women's Hoops To A 64-53 Victory Over Butler

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team shook off a tough second quarter with a solid second-half effort to defeat Butler, 64-53, on Friday, Feb. 11 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. In the fourth quarter, a trio of freshmen combined to score 16 points as the Friars outscored the Bulldogs 25-12.
1ST QUARTER:
• Friars started the game on an 8-0 run after hitting their first three shot attempts of the game.
• Providence extended its lead to 12-2, forcing a Butler timeout with 6:40 on the clock.
• At the timeout, the Friars were 5-6 from the floor as a team and all five field goals were assisted, including four dimes by Janai Crooms.
• Seven of the Friars' 12 points came off of three Butler turnovers.
• Providence extended its lead to 19-9 with a 5-0 spurt late in the quarter but the Bulldogs got back on the board with a driving lay-in from Zoe Jackson as the quarter expired.
• Mary Baskerville led Providence with seven points on 3-4 shooting, while Celena Taborn scored six points for Butler on 3-3 shooting.
• As a team, the Friars shot 57.1-percent from the field (8-14), while Butler checked in at 35.7-percent (5-14).
2ND QUARTER:
• Butler started the second quarter with a 9-0 run to take a 20-19 lead, but Kylee Sheppard halted the run at 6:19 with a jumper to give the lead back to Providence (21-20).
• Sheppard's bucket sparked a 7-0 run to put the Friars ahead, 26-20, with 3:22 on the clock.
• The Bulldogs went on a 12-0 run over the final 3:22 of the half to take a 32-26 advantage into the locker room.
• Taborn, who entered the game as the NCAA Division I leader in field-goal percentage, scored 18 points on 9-10 shooting and added five rebounds for Butler.
• After shooting 57-percent in the first quarter, the Friars cooled to 19-percent in the second quarter (3-16).
• Butler shot a blistering 64-percent from the field in the second quarter (9-14).
3RD QUARTER:
• Crooms converted a lay-up in transition to start the scoring and later hit one of two free throws to cut the deficit to three (32-29).
• Butler answered with a 5-0 spurt to gain its largest advantage of the game (37-29).
• The Friars held the Bulldogs scoring for 3:24 and cut the lead to two with six unanswered points (39-37).
• Butler took a 41-39 lead into the final quarter.
4TH QUARTER:
• Alyssa Geary tied the game, 41-41, on the first possession of the fourth quarter, but Tenley Dowell converted a three-point play on the Bulldog's next trip down the floor (44-41).
• Providence regained the lead (49-44) with an 8-0 run with 7:10 to play.
• The run featured back-to-back three pointers by Crooms and Audrey Koch and a lay-in by Olsen at the right block.
• Sheppard hit two critical threes and Mary Baskerville got loose for consecutive lay-ups during an 10-3 scoring advantage that put Providence ahead 61-52 with 1:41 to play.
• The run proved critical as it allowed the Friars to claim a 64-53 victory.
• Providence outscored Butler 25-12 in the fourth quarter overall.
• The freshmen trio of Sheppard, Olsen and Koch combined to score 16 of the Friars 25 points in the final frame.
