Women's Hoops Falls To Xavier, 62-60

Olivia Olsen recorded a career-best 17 points on 7-9 shooting.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Xavier, 62-60, on Feb. 13 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. Freshman forward Olivia Olsen recorded a career-high 17 points and four blocked shots and added nine rebounds to lead the Friars.
 
1ST QUARTER:
Janai Crooms scored five-straight points capped by a traditional three-point play to give the Friars a 9-6 lead at the 4:23 mark.
• Providence extended its run to 13-2 to take a 17-8 lead with 1:46 left on the clock.
• The Friars carried a 20-10 edge into the intermission.
• Olsen paced the Friars with six points on 3-3 shooting from the field.
• Xavier held an 11-6 advantage on the boards in the first 10 minutes.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence out-scored Xavier 7-4 through the first 3:35 of the second to go ahead 27-14.
• During the opening span, all four of the Musketeers points came from the free throw line.
• Xavier used an 8-0 run to get within 27-22. 
• At the media timeout, Xavier held a 12-10 scoring advantage in the frame, with 10 of its points coming from the foul line.
Meghan Huerter hit a key three for Providence as the shot clock expired to halt the Musketeer run at the 3:16 mark.
• Providence took a 33-29 lead into the halftime locker room.
• Sixteen of Xavier's 29 points came from the charity stripe.
• Olsen led the Friars in scoring (11) and rebounding (five), while Mackayla Scarlett netted nine points for Xavier.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Back-to-back buckets by Shelby Calhoun and Ayanna Townsend to start the third tied the game, 33-33.
• Xavier had two chances to take the lead but were off the mark on their shot attempts.
• Crooms helped the Friars regain the lead with a strong take to the hoop and Alyssa Geary sank a pair of free throws to restore Providence's four-point advantage (37-33).
• Providence used a 9-2 run to bounce out to a 46-38 lead with 1:51 on the clock, but went scoreless the rest of the way.
• Xavier tacked on two free throws to close the quarter and the Friars took a 46-40 advantage into the fourth.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• A 9-2 run helped the Musketeers claim at 49-48 lead (5:29).
• Grace Efosa scored the Friars' only two points during the stretch from the foul line.
• The Friars were 0-3 from the field, while Xavier hit four of its seven attempts.
• Sheppard hit a pair of free throws to halt the run and put Providence back on top midway through the frame (50-49).
• The game was deadlocked, 55-55, with a minute left in regulation.
• Xavier called timeout to draw up a play, which resulted in a Scarlett three pointer from the right baseline with 41-seconds left.
• Sheppard was hit with an offensive foul on the Friars' next play, but she was able to get it back on the defensive end on the ensuing inbounds play.
• Providence could not take advantage on the offensive end and was forced to foul.
• Scarlett hit both free throws with 24 seconds left to give the Musketeers a 60-55 lead.
• On the Friars' next possession, an offensive rebound led to a three-pointer by Geary with 9-seconds left (60-58).
• Shaila Beeler hit a pair of free throws to make it a two-possession game with 7-seconds on the clock (62-58).
Audrey Koch hit a short jumper in the paint as time expired, but the Friars fell short, 62-60.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Olsen finished the day with a career-high 17 points and four blocked shots and contributed nine rebounds and one assist.
• Sheppard also recorded double figures for Providence with 12 points.
• Scarlett paced four Musketeers in double figures with a game-high 18 points.
• Xavier shot 7-11 from the field in the fourth quarter to claim the win (.636).
• The Musketeers benefited from the foul line on the day, converting 25-31 attempts. 
• Xavier also outscored Providence 16-9 in points off of turnovers.
• The Friars struggled offensively in the second half, hitting just 7-28 from the field (.250).
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence hits the road for three games in five days beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 16 against Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Friars remain on the road for match-ups at Seton Hall (Feb. 18) and St. John's (Feb. 20). All three games will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network via FloSports.
