The Friars will play a home-and-home series with the UConn Huskies this weekend. First, the teams face-off at Freitas Ice Forum on Friday, Feb. 11 at 6:00 p.m. The series finale will be played back home at Schneider Arena on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 3:00 p.m.
Last Time Out
Last weekend, the completed a weekend sweep against Holy Cross with two overtime victories. More recently, the Friars faced off against Merrimack College this past Tuesday (Feb. 8). In the mid-week matchup the Friars defeated the Warriors, 4-3.
Providence jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from
Caroline Peterson (East Falmouth, Mass.) and
Delaney Couture (Shrewsbury, Mass.). Peterson put the Friars on the board, 1-0, at the 7:14 mark of the first period. Assisted by
Hunter Barnett (Caledon, Ontario) and
Lily Hendrikson (Edina, Minn.), the goal served as Peterson's sixth goal in the last five games and tenth of the season. Couture followed up with a goal just 1:23 later, 2-0.
Hayley Lunny (Bedford, N.Y.) and
Isabelle Hardy (Oakville, Ontario) earned the assists on the play and Providence carried the 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Merrimack got on the board, 2-1, with a goal from Hannah Corneliusen at the 12:33 mark of the second.
Lindsay Bochna (Toronto, Ontario) put the Friars ahead, 3-1, with a goal just 38 seconds later with help from Barnett. After
Bailey Burton (Bloomington, Minn.) was whistled for slashing with 5:10 remaining the second, the Warriors scored on the power play, 3-2, making it a within-one game heading into the third period.The Warriors found the equalizer, 3-3, at the 7:34 mark of the third with a goal from Emily Oosterveld.
KC Brooks (Colorado Springs, Colo.) netted the game-winner for the Friars with 5:25 remaining in play, which served as her first career goal and point. Brooks was assisted by
Brooke Becker (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Burton.
Scouting the Friars
The Friars are currently 12-12-5 overall and 9-11-2 in Hockey East.
Lunny leads the charge offensively for the Friars with 18 points (six goals, 12 assists). Bochna is second. She's tallied eight goals and nine assists for 16 points. Peterson leads the team in goals (10) and has scored six for the Friars in the past five games. Providence has 20 different players in the line-up with at least a point. Eighteen different players have posted assists, while seventeen players have found the back of the net.
Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) has made 20 starts in net. She holds a .938 save percentage and a 1.94 goals against average. The netminder has made 595 total saves and has 2 shutouts.
Scouting the Huskies
The Huskies enter the weekend with a 21-6-3 record with a 15-5-3 mark in the Hockey East. Last weekend, UConn faced Boston University on Friday and New Hampshire on Saturday. The Huskies tied Boston University, 1-1, before blanking the New Hampshire Wildcats, 5-0.
The Huskies average 2.8 goals per game and have converted on 17/104 power play chances (16.3%) and 56/64 of penalty kills (87.5%).
Who to Watch
Morgan Wabick leads the Huskies in points (26) through nine goals and 17 assists. She is followed by Natalie Snodgrass and Viki Harkness who have tallied 25 points apiece. Snodgrass leads UConn in goals (12). Defensively, the Huskies are led by Alex-Anne Boyer who has recorded 45 blocks throughout the season.
Samantha Carpentier-Yelle and Megan Warrener have split time in net for the Huskies.
Carpentier-Yelle holds a 1.76 goals against average and .921 save percentage through 18 games played. Warrener holds a 1.11 goals against average and .948 save percentage through 12 games.
