St. John’s Uses Strong Fourth Quarter To Defeat Providence In BIG EAST Play, 63-55

Kylee Sheppard netted a season-best 17 points for the Friars.
QUEENS, N.Y. – The Providence College women's basketball team took a three-point lead into the final quarter against St. John's on Dec. 18 at Carnesecca Arena, but the Red Storm outscored the Friars 23-12 in the final frame to claim a 63-55 win. Providence dropped to 8-5 overall (0-3 BIG EAST). St. John's remained unbeaten at 11-0 and improved to 3-0 in league play.
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence led 7-4 with 6:53 on the clock.
• St. John's went on an 8-0 run during a span of 1:54 to take a 12-7 advantage into the media timeout (4:59).
• Kylee Sheppard halted the run on a lay-up with 4:16 to play.
• The Friars closed out the final 3:18 with a 5-2 scoring advantage to get within two at the intermission (16-14).
• Sheppard paced all scorers in the opening 10 minutes of play with seven points on 3-4 shooting.
2ND QUARTER:
• Brynn Farrell opened the scoring with a traditional three-point play at 9:14 to give Providence a 17-16 lead.
• Sheppard got her first bucket of the second quarter to make it a 19-18 lead with 7:35 to play, but St. John's responded with seven-straight points to take a 25-19 edge (4:17).
• Providence outscored St. John's 7-2 over the final 3:51.
• Grace Efosa tallied five-straight points for Providence in the spurt and Sheppard scored as time expired to get within one at halftime (27-26).
• Sheppard had 11 points for Providence at the break on 5-6 shooting.
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence took a 34-33 lead on a 6-0 spurt, capped by a lay-in from Janai Crooms at the 7:02mark.
• St. John's held a 36-34 lead at the media (4:14).
• Efosa hit one of two free throws out of the break, but the Red Storm answered with back-to-back buckets to push their lead to five (40-35) with 4:01 on the clock.
• An 8-0 spurt put the Friars up 43-40.
• Sheppard scored four of the Friars' six points in the run and Nariah Scott drilled a pull-up jumper as time expired.
• Sheppard owned a season-high 17 points heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.
4TH QUARTER:
• The Red Storm started the fourth on a 9-0 run.
• Providence committed five fouls in the first 2:28 of the fourth quarter, sending St. John's into the bonus for the remainder of regulation.
• Farrell scored the Friars' first points of the quarter at the 5:30 mark on a three from the top of the key. St. John's led 49-46.
• St. John's took its largest lead of the day (63-52) with eight-seconds left.
• Farrell hit a three as time expired to make the final score 63-55).
• St. John's outscored Providence 23-12 in the fourth quarter overall.
NOTES:
• Sheppard led the Friars with a season-high 17 points and matched her career high in rebounding (seven). She also contributed two assists and one steal.
