KINGSTON, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to intrastate rival Rhode Island, 74-72, on Nov. 14 at the Ryan Center in Kingston, R.I. Both teams moved to 2-1 on the season.
RECORDS:
Providence: 2-1
Rhode Island: 2-1
1ST QUARTER:
• Friars started 5-5 from the field to take their first lead (12-11) at the 4:42 mark.
• URI responded with six-straight points in just under a minute to regain the lead 17-12.
• Janai Crooms and Nariah Scott scored back-to-back buckets for Providence to inch within 17-16 at the first-quarter media timeout (2:38).
• Grace Efosa got her own rebound and hit a short jumper with 5-seconds left in the quarter to tie the game, 21-21.
• The Friars shot 64-percent from the floor (9-14), while URI hit 47-percent (8-17).
2ND QUARTER:
• The Friars started the second on a 7-0 run, with five of those points coming from Efosa, giving Providence a 28-21 lead.
• URI was forced to call a timeout with 6:36 on the clock as the Friars mounted a 36-26 lead, having outscore the Rams 15-5 through the opening 3:24 of the frame.
• The Friars went ahead 41-28 for their largest lead, but Rhode Island took advantage of three-straight PC turnovers to get within 41-33 with 3:10 on the clock.
• Providence took a 50-40 lead into halftime as Crooms hit a jumper as the clock expired.
• The Friars were 12-15 from the field in the second quarter (80-percent), including 5-6 from three-point territory.
• Meghan Huerter and Crooms each scored six points in the quarter. Huerter was 2-2 from three.
• Crooms paced all scorers in the first half with 15 points on 7-8 shooting and dished three assists.
3RD QUARTER:
• The Rams used an 11-0 run to take a 53-52 lead with 4:23 remaining on the clock.
• Emily Archibald halted the run with a free throw on the Friars' next possession to tie the game (53-53).
• Providence went more than seven minutes without a field goal before Huerter hit her third triple of the game to put the Friars back on top with 1:52 left (56-53).
• The bucket sparked a 5-0 run before URI broke a near four-minute scoring drought of its own with 31-seconds left to make it a 58-55 game.
• Efosa hit one of two free throws with to close the scoring, giving Providence a 59-55 edge heading into the final 10 minutes.
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence took a 68-63 lead and called a timeout with 5:41 left in regulation.
• URI used a 7-0 run to take the lead (70-68) with 4:00 on the clock.
• The Rams extended the run to 9-0, forcing a Providence timeout at the 3:30 mark (72-68).
• A 4-0 spurt by the Friars tied the game with 1:46 on the clock.
• Crooms' runner in the lane with 1:07 to play was too strong and the Rams hauled in the defensive rebound and called timeout in the front court.
• Out of the timeout Maye Toure put the Rams ahead with a lay-up with just under a minute to play and the Friars were off the mark on their next offensive attempt.
• Providence got a stop on defense and Nariah Scott secured the rebound and the Friars got a timeout with three-seconds remaining.
• The Friars got the ball to Crooms who had to pull up 10 feet behind the three-point arc for a final look and URI escaped with a 74-72 win.
NOTES:
• The Friars shot 72-percent in the first half (21-29), including a 6-8 performance from three-point territory en route to their 50-40 halftime lead.
• Providence shooting dipped to 38-percent in the second half (8-31) and the Friars finished the game 29-50 from the field (56-percent).
• The Rams used a +8 advantage in scoring off of turnovers (22-14) in the game.
• Providence struggled from the free throw line, making just 7-16 attempts (44-percent).
• Crooms finished with a game-high 24 points on 11-16 shooting and added four rebounds and four assists.
• Crooms has scored 20+ points in two of the Friars three games this season.
• Efosa registered a career-high 13 points and contributed three assists and one steal.
• Huerter also completed the game with a career high in the scoring column (nine points) on 3-4 shooting from beyond the arc. She also matched her career high with two assists.
• Archibald also gave the Friars a spark off the bench with six points, seven boards and three assists.
• Providence held a slim advantage on the glass (33-32).
• Toure paced the Rams with 16 points, including 10 in the second half.
• Dolly Cairns (13) and Madison Hattix-Covington (10) also reached double figures, while Anaelle Dutat scored seven points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

• The Friars will continue their three-game road swing against Iona on Thursday, Nov. 17 in New Rochelle, N.Y. and Sunday, Nov. 20 against Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
