Women's Hoops Holds On To Defeat Iona, 53-50

Janai Crooms netted a game-high 18 points and grabbed a team-best nine boards.
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Providence College women's basketball team survived a furious fourth-quarter comeback by the Iona Gaels on Thursday night in New Rochelle, N.Y. to earn a 53-50 victory. Senior preseason All-BIG EAST selection Janai Crooms netted a game-high 18 points and added a team-best nine boards.

1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars started the game on a 6-0 run.
• Iona didn't get on the scoreboard until the 5:44 mark with a three from the left wing.
• The two teams combined for 2-17 shooting from the field heading into the media timeout (4:50), with the Friars leading 6-3.
• Providence finished the quarter with a 7-3 scoring advantage to take a 15-8 lead into the intermission.
2ND QUARTER:
• The tough shooting night continued for both teams in the second quarter as Providence carried a 17-10 lead into the media timeout (4:05). Providence was 1-7 from the floor through the first 5:55 of the second, while the Gaels were 1-10.
• Providence outscored Iona 7-4 to close the frame and took a 10-point lead into halftime (24-14).
• Grace Efosa scored six of the Friars' nine points in the second quarter.
• The Friars scored 15 of their 24 first-half points off of 10 Iona turnovers.
3RD QUARTER:
• Iona started the third with a 6-2 spurt to get within 26-20.
• Crooms scored six points in a 9-0 Friars run and Brynn Farrell added a three-pointer in transition to provide the Friars with 35-20 lead.
• After a Gaels timeout, Providence extended its run to 15-0, while holding Iona scoreless for over six minutes (41-20).
• Iona finally got back on the scoreboard with a three-pointer by Judith Gomez as the game clock expired.
• The Friars led 41-23 heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence earned its largest lead of the game (48-25) with 7:30 remaining on the clock.
• Iona went on a 14-0 run during a span of 3:25 to get within single digits (48-39).
• Olivia Olsen halted the run with a lay-up, but the Gaels answered with five-straight to make it a six point game with 2:25 left (50-44).
• With 1:25 to play, Crooms hit one of two free throws and Providence called a timeout.
• The Gaels continued to chip away, hitting back-to-back three-pointers to cut the deficit to one (51-50) with 36.5-seconds remaining.
• Providence called timeout and drew up a play that got Crooms to the rim for two with 10.8 on the clock, giving the Friars a three-point cushion (53-50).
• Iona got a good look at three from the left wing on a nicely executed play, but the shot was off target.
• Iona outscored the Friars 27-12 in the fourth quarter, including a 25-5 advantage over the final 7:30 of the game.
• Providence committed nine turnovers in the fourth quarter, which Iona converted into a +15 margin on the scoreboard in the final 10 minutes (17-2).
• Iona shot 11-15 (0.733) in the fourth during their comeback attempt, including a 5-7 performance from three-point range.
• Emily Archibald (five) and Crooms (five) combined to score 10 of the Friars' 12 points in the fourth to help hold off the Gaels.

• Crooms led all scorers with 18 points on 8-10 shooting and narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
• Additionally, Crooms scored 13 of her 18 points in the second half on 6-7 shooting from the field.
• Efosa contributed eight points, three assists and a career-high nine rebounds.
