PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College volleyball team fell to the nationally ranked Marquette Golden Eagles in straight sets on Saturday, Nov. 12 in Alumni Hall.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Marquette won the first set, 25-15.
- After an early 5-1 lead by the Golden Eagles, the Friars were able to cut the deficit to two, scoring three of the next four points (6-4).
- Marquette pulled ahead again, notching a five-point lead (12-7), leading to a Providence timeout.
- Out of the break, the lead ballooned to 10 (20-10).
- The Friars earned four straight points to cut the deficit to six (20-14), but it wasn't enough to overcome the Marquette lead. The Golden Eagles closed the set with a 25-15 win.
- Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas) and Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) paced the Friar offense, recording three kills apiece.
- Three Friars collected five digs, including Brielle Mullally (Garden Grove, Calif.), Sammie Ruggles (North Olmsted, Ohio) and Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.)
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Marquette took the second set, 25-21, for a 2-0 edge in the match.
- The beginning of the set had the teams trading points, leading to an early 8-8 tie.
- From this point, the Friars scored three straight points, giving them an 11-8 lead and forcing a Marquette timeout.
- Providence continued its run out of the break, expanding its lead to six (16-10). The Friars' 5-2 run was highlighted by two kills from Kayla Grant (Rowlett, Texas).
- Marquette was able to close the deficit at 20 and continue its run to take the set 25-21.
- Nelson led the way with six kills, hitting .545.
- Mullally and Ruggles each added five assists. Mullally also collected five digs.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Marquette took the match after a 25-13 win in the third set.
- Providence started the third set with four straight points out of the gate. Marquette responded with four of its own, leading to a 4-4 tie early on.
- The Friars took a timeout after Marquette started to separate itself (9-5).
- The lead ballooned to 10 (16-6) forcing a second Providence timeout.
- Marquette maintained control to win the set 25-13.
- Grant notched two blocks and a kill.
MATCH NOTES:
- Mullally posted a double-double with 10 assists and 10 digs.
- Nelson recorded a match-best 11 kills.
- Taylor led the Friar defense with 11 digs.
