Providence College Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams Compete At NCAA Regionals

The women’s team finished in first place and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

NEW YORK, N.Y.– The Providence College men's and women's cross-country teams competed against nationally and regionally ranked teams today (Nov. 11) at the NCAA Northeast Regional Meet at Van Cortlandt Park in New York, N.Y. The Friar women placed first out of 37 teams (71 points). With its' first-place finish the Friar women's team earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship on Saturday, Nov. 19. in Stillwater, Okla. It marks the first time the women have won the NCAA Northeast Regionals since 2017. The Friar men placed fourth out of 34 teams (135 points).

For the women's 6k race, freshman Jane Buckley (Cork, Ireland) finished first for the Friars in the competitive field. Buckley went out in the top-5 and maintained her position through the course. Buckley went on to finish third (20:27.4) overall.
 
Junior Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) and freshman Níamh O'Mahony (Kerry, Ireland) were the second and third runners across the line for Providence. Flockhart moved through the field to place 12th (20:55.9) overall and O'Mahony was not far behind finishing 14th (20:59.4).
 
Rounding out the top-five was graduate student Orla O'Connor (Waterford, Ireland) and senior Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) placing 17th (21:02.8) and 25th (21:10.3), respectively.
 
On the men's side, graduate student Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) was the first Friar to cross the line. Rocha went out in the top-10 and maintained his position for a fifth-place finish (29:37.4).
 
Junior Shane Coffey (Naas, Ireland) and graduate student David Principe Jr. (Johnston, R.I.) were the second and third Friars across the line for the men. Coffey finished 24th in a time of 30:03.6 while Principe finished 34th (30:25.6). 
 
Rounding out the top-five were junior Pat Thygesen (Brisbane, Australia) and graduate student David McGlynn (Waterford, Ireland) finishing 35th (30:25.9) and 37th (30:27.8), respectively.
 
Marcelo Rocha will compete as an individual at the NCAA Championship, which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19 at Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course in Stillwater, Okla. The women's team automatically qualifies for the NCAA National Championship by placing first.
