Women’s Soccer Set To Host DePaul And St. John’s On Chapey Field

The Friars and Blue Demons will kick-off at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6 on Chapey Field.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.  – The Providence College women's soccer team will host DePaul University on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 6 in Providence, R.I. Following Thursday's game, the Friars will welcome St. John's to Chapey Field on Sunday, Oct. 9.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS… Providence enters Thursday's game with a 3-7-1 overall record and a 1-2-0 record in BIG EAST play. The Friars went 0-2-0 last week falling to Butler (2-1) on Sept. 29 and Creighton (2-0) on Oct. 2. Junior Avery Snead (Wrentham, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season against Butler.
 
Providence has had seven different athletes score goals this season. Junior Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.) leads the Friars offense with five points on two goals and one assist. In addition to Hughes and Snead, senior Alexis Rothmann (Norwell, Mass.), junior Ava Brandt (Chester, N.J.), graduate student Hannah Pinkus (Manchester, Vt.), sophomore Gillian Kenney (Hanover, Mass.) and senior Angie Suaza (Nashua, N.H.) have also scored for the Friars. Graduate student Elayna Grillakis (Lowell, Mass.) and junior Kyla Gallagher (Farmington, Conn.) lead the Friars in assists this season with three apiece. 

FRIARS PICKED FOURTH IN BIG EAST PRESEASON POLL… The BIG EAST conference announced its women's soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll on Thursday, Aug. 11. The Friars were picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST behind Georgetown, Xavier and Butler.
 
Hughes was the lone Friar to receive preseason recognition as a member of the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Last season, Hughes started in all 20 games for the Friars. She led Providence in points (22), goals (nine) and was tied for second on the team in assists (four). At the conclusion of the season, she earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team.

SERIES HISTORY AGAINST DePAUL… The Friars hold a 7-7-4 overall record against the Blue Demons. Four of the last five meetings between the teams have ended in a tie. The Friars broke the draw streak last season with a 1-0 double overtime win in Chicago, Ill.
 
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEMONS… DePaul enters Thursday's match-up with a 2-8 overall record and 0-3 record in conference play. The Blue Demons are looking for their first BIG EAST win after losing to Marquette, Xavier, and Georgetown over their past three games.
 
Forward Susie Soderstrom and forward Katie Godden lead the Blue Demons' offense with seven points. Soderstrom has tallied three goals and one assist while Godden has registered two goals and three assists. Goalkeepers Mollie Eriksson and Elena Milam have split time in goal this season. Eriksson has started in seven games recording a 1.92 goals against average and a .783 save percentage. Milam has played in nine games registering a 2.11 goals against average and .667 save percentage.
 
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST ST. JOHN'S… Providence holds a 17-17-5 overall record against the Red Storm. In 2021, the Friars fell to St. John's in both of their meetings. On Oct 17, the Friars fell 1-0 and then in the Quarterfinal of the BIG EAST Tournament the Friars fell 2-1 in double overtime. Both games were played in Queens, N.Y.
 
SCOUTING THE RED STORM… St. John's enters the weekend with a 5-4-3 overall record and 2-2 record in BIG EAST play. The Red Storm will host the Creighton Bluejays on Thursday, Oct. 6 before traveling to Providence to face the Friars.
 
The Red Storm have had four players score two goals this season with midfielder Jessica Garziano leading the offense in points with eight. Forward Nicole Gordon is the second leading scorer for St. John's with two goals and two assists. Goalkeeper Gina Muzi has tallied 1,035 minutes in goal this season. She has registered a 0.78 goals against average and 0.775 save percentage.
 
UP NEXT… The Friars will travel to Milwaukee, Wis. to face Marquette University on Thursday, Oct. 13. Kick-off is set for 8:00 p.m. et.
