The 18th-ranked Providence College women and Friar men each claimed second-place in the team standings.

ATTLEBORO, MASS. – The 18th-ranked Providence College women's cross country team and Friars men's cross country team competed at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship on Saturday, Oct. 28 in Attleboro, Mass. The Friar women finished second (40 points) out of 11 teams. The men finished second (55 points) out of nine teams.

Freshman Jane Buckley (Cork, Ireland) led the Friar effort with a first-place finish. Buckley won the race in a time of 20:06, making her the first Friar freshman and second freshman in league history to win the BIG EAST Cross Country title. The last Providence College runner to win the individual title was current Friar Assistant Coach Cat Rocha in 2017. Buckley is the 13th female Friar to claim the title overall.

"It was amazing. I wasn't expecting that to be honest because this was my first BIG EAST competition," Buckley said about winning the race. "I've only ran three races here so far. This one was definitely different because the last two races there were 400 people, so it was nice."

Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) finished after Buckley with a fourth-place finish (20:18). Lily Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) and Niamh O'Mahony (Kerry, Ireland) followed, finishing sixth (20:27) and 13th (20:47), respectively. Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland) rounded out the top runners for the women with a 16th place finish (21:00).

On the men's side, Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) and David Principe, Jr. (Johnston, R.I.) both finished in the top-10. Rocha placed sixth (23:35) and Principe finished eighth (23:37). They were followed by Patrick Thygesen (Brisbane, Australia) in 12th place (23:53), Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand) in 14th place (23:57) and Shane Coffey (Naas, Ireland) in 15th (24:00). It is the best finish for the Friar men since their runner-up performance at the 2016 BIG EAST Championship.

"It was a great day for us. Fantastic weather and a great course," Friar Coach Ray Treacy said. "On top of all that today, the teams ran fantastic and that's what we want to see ultimately. It was a very exciting day for us and we're looking forward to the next couple weeks now."

The Friar men and women toe the line next at the NCAA Northeast Regionals held at Van Cortlandt Park in New York, N.Y.
