STORRS, CONN. – The Providence College volleyball team fell to BIG EAST foe Connecticut, 3-0, on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn. Providence dropped to 10-11 on the season (2-7 BIG EAST), while Connecticut improved to 10-10 (4-5 BIG EAST).
1st SET: UConn earned a 25-17 victory in the first set.
• The Friars got out to an early 5-1 lead.
• Connecticut went on a 7-1 scoring run to take an 8-6 edge.
• The two teams battled back-and-forth and Providence managed to tie the set 13-13.
• UConn closed out the match with a 12-4 scoring advantage to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
2nd SET: Connecticut won the second set, 25-14.
• In the early stages of the set, neither team was able to gain a lead larger than two points.
• Providence led 9-7 before the Huskies went on a 10-1 run to seize control of the set (17-10).
3rd SET: The Huskies closed out the match with a 25-13 victory in the third set.
• There were nine ties and six lead changes to begin the third.
• Connecticut used a 7-0 scoring spurt to take an 18-11 lead.
• The two teams traded points until the Huskies reeled off six-unanswered to take claim the set and win the match (25-13).
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
•
Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) led the Friars with eight kills in the match.
•
Brielle Mullally (Garden Grove, Calif.) and
Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas) each recorded six kills for the Friars.
• Mullally added a team-best 10 assists and also contributed eight digs and two block assists to her stat line.
•
Sammie Ruggles (North Olmsted, Ohio) and
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) each notched double-digit digs with 11 and 10, respectively.
•
Sasha Rudich (Austin, Texas) recorded three solo blocks and two block assists in the match.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return home to host Butler in BIG EAST action on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
