Kylee Sheppard Records A Career-High 22 Points In BIG EAST Match-Up Against DePaul

Friars fell to the nation's top-scoring team, 98-77.


PROVIDENCE, R.I.
 – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to BIG EAST foe DePaul, 98-77, on Friday night at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. Freshman point guard Kylee Sheppard recorded a career-best 22 points and six assists in just her fourth game of the season. 
 
1ST QUARTER:
• Sheppard scored the Friars' first five points of the game.
Lauren Sampson hit a triple from the left wing to give Providence an 8-6 advantage with 7:29 on the clock.
• Midway through the quarter, both teams were shooting north of 60-percent from the field, with the Blue Demons holding a 15-14 edge at the five-minute mark.
• At the media timeout (4:10), the game was tied, 18-18.
• Providence took a 26-22 lead into the break, marking the Friars' highest point total in a quarter during the 2021-22 season.
• Sheppard paced the Friars with nine points on 4-5 shooting, including a steal and a lay-in with 17-seconds left to cap the first quarter scoring.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• DePaul outscored Providence 15-4 through the opening 3:36 of the second quarter to force a PC timeout (37-30).
• The Friars came out of the timeout to score five-straight to get the game back within five points (40-35).
• Providence cut the deficit to 46-42 with 2:28 remaining on the clock, but DePaul closed the half with nine unanswered points to take a 55-42 edge into the locker room. 
 
3RD QUARTER:
Mary Baskerville hit the first three-point bucket of her career on an inbounds play with two seconds remaining on the shot clock. 
• It capped a 15-9 scoring advantage for the Friars through the first 5:30 of the third quarter to cut DePaul's lead to seven (64-57). 
• The Blue Demons scored four unanswered points to close the quarter and held a 24-23 scoring advantage during the frame.
• DePaul took a 79-65 lead into the fourth and final frame.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• The Blue Demons kept their foot on the gas in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Friars 19-12 to earn the 21-point victory (98-77).
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• In just her fourth game of the season, Sheppard eclipsed the 20-point mark for the first time in her career. She led all scorers in the game with 22 points on 9-12 shooting. 
• Sheppard is the fourth Friar this season to record 20+ points in a game, and the second freshman to do so. Emily Archibald scored 20 points against Maine on Nov. 13.
• Baskerville completed the night with 15 points on 6-6 shooting from the field. She added five rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and one steal in just 17 minutes of action.
Lauren Sampson played a steady game with eight points and a career-high six rebounds to lead Providence on the boards.
Alyssa Geary handed out five assists for the third time this season and added six points, five rebounds and two blocked shots.
• As a team, Providence dished a season-high 22 assists on 32 made field goals.
• The Friars shot an impressive 54.2-percent from the floor (32-59) and were 5-16 from three (.316) and 8-10 from the foul line (.800).
• The Blue Demons shot 47.5-percent from the floor and finished the game with 21 more shot attempts than Providence (38-80). DePaul was 10-27 from three (.370) and 12-15 from the line (.800).
• DePaul entered the game as the top-scoring team in the nation at 91.7 points per game.
• Sophomore Grace Efosa saw her first game action of the season for Providence, after successfully rehabbing from ACL surgery in the offseason. It was an injury she sustained in the 2021 BIG EAST Tournament First-Round against Butler.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 11 against Xavier. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Dec. 31 but was canceled due to COVID issues. Tuesday's tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
