Women's Hoops Outlasts Xavier On The Road, 54-49

Cincinnati native Kylee Sheppard paced the Friars with 13 points.
CINCINNATI, OHIO – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated BIG EAST foe Xavier, 54-49, on Jan. 11 at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Friars improved to 7-7 overall (2-3 BIG EAST), while Xavier dropped to 6-8 overall (1-4 BIG EAST).
1ST QUARTER:
• Cincinnati native Kylee Sheppard hit a triple for the Friars' first points to even the game, 3-3.
• Xavier scored five-straight points over the next 3:36 to take an 8-3 lead at the media (4:47).
• Providence used a 7-2 scoring edge to tie the game, 10-10, at the break.
2ND QUARTER:
• The Friars were scoreless through the opening 2:40 of the second until Janai Crooms got loose on the left block for an uncontested lay-up with 7:20 on the clock (12-12).
• Providence took its first lead of the night on its next offensive possession as Sheppard drained her second three-pointer of the night (15-12) at the 6:54 mark.
• A 9-3 scoring run gave Providence a 24-16 lead.
• Olivia Olsen scored four points to lead the Friars during the run.
• Xavier scored four unanswered points to close the half and the Friars went into the locker room with a 24-20 lead.
• Sheppard led all scorers with eight first-half points, while Mackayla Scarlett recorded seven points for Xavier.
• Crooms and Mary Baskerville combined for 16 of the Friars' 24 rebounds in the half, with eight each.
3RD QUARTER:
• Xavier used a 7-2 run to regain the lead (27-26), but Lauren Sampson drained a three from the left wing at the 6:21 mark to put the Friars back on top.
• Providence maintained its lead (35-31) at the media timeout.
• Olsen came up big late in the third as she converted a traditional three-point play to break a 38-38 tie and give the Friars a 41-38 lead.
• The Friars took a 41-40 edge into the fourth quarter.
4TH QUARTER:
• The two teams traded baskets to start the fourth, but Xavier was able to tie the game, 46-46, with the help of two three pointers.
• Baskerville helped Providence regain the lead with 5:57 to play as Crooms found her cutting to the hoop.
• After enduring a scoreless stretch, Alyssa Geary added to the Friars lead (50-46) with 2:34 remaining.
• Sheppard went to the line with 22-seconds left in the game to provide a 52-49 cushion on the scoreboard.
• After a defensive stop, the Friars sealed the game with a pair of free throws from Archibald with three seconds left in the game.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Sheppard paced the Friars with 13 points on 4-8 shooting, including a 3-5 performance from beyond the arc. She also added four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
• Geary added 10 points, three rebounds and four blocked shots.
• Providence won the boards with a 44-39 advantage.
• Crooms and Baskerville each hauled in 11 rebounds.
• Baskerville moved into 18th all-time in career rebounding at Providence (641), passing Monika Roberts '01 (636).
• Baskerville also added five points and four blocked shots. She is 11 points shy of 1,000 points for her career.
• Crooms dished a game-high seven assists
• The Friars recorded 11 blocked shots in the game, marking the most blocked shots for PC since swatting 10 shots against Bryant on Nov. 12, 2013.
• The Friars earned their second victory all-time at the Cintas Center, having entered the match-up 1-7 all-time at the venue.

• The Friars return to action this weekend with a pair of BIG EAST games against St. John's (Jan. 14) and Seton Hall (Jan. 16). Both games are scheduled to tipoff at 1:00 p.m. and will be played at Alumni Hall.
