Stingy Defense Propels Friars To 56-49 BIG EAST Win Over St. John's

Mary Baskerville recorded her 1,000th career point and paced the Friars with 20 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team held St. John's to a season-low 26.2-percent shooting en route to a 56-49 BIG EAST victory on Jan. 14 in Providence, R.I. Mary Baskerville reached the 1,000-point milestone in the win, finishing the game with a season-high 20 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.
1ST QUARTER:
• Friars got out to a 16-9 lead at the media timeout (3:16) as five different players cracked the scoring column.
• Providence led by as many as nine in the quarter and took an 18-11 advantage into the break.
• Janai Crooms led the Friars with five points, while Mary Baskerville collected six rebounds in the opening 10 minutes.
2ND QUARTER:
• The Friars opened the second frame with back-to-back buckets to gain a double-digit lead (22-11).
• St. John's responded with the next eight points of the game, cutting its deficit to 22-19.
• Olivia Olsen halted a scoring drought of 7:57 with a lay-up at the left block with 29-seconds left on the clock.
• Poor shooting plagued both clubs in the second quarter. Providence shot 21.4-percent (3-14), while the Red Storm shot 14.3-percent (2-14).
• Providence took a 24-19 lead into the locker room at halftime.
3RD QUARTER:
• The Friars used a 7-0 run to take 29-19 lead at the 6:32 mark.
• St. John's answered with a 5-0 spurt in under a minute of action to get back within five.
• The Friars carried a 31-24 lead into the media timeout (4:41).
• St. John's got within three but the Friars answered with a 7-1 run to create some space (38-29).
• Leilani Correa closed the scoring for St. John's with a pair of free throws.
• Providence took a 38-31 edge into the fourth quarter.
4TH QUARTER:
• The Red Storm started the final frame with a 7-0 run to tie the game, 38-38, forcing a Providence timeout (8:16).
• Providence turned the ball over out of the timeout and St. John's took the lead on its ensuing possession (40-38).
• Emily Archibald drained a three for the Friars to help regain the lead, but Kadaja Bailey matched her on the other end for a 43-41 Red Storm lead.
• Baskerville hit a baseline jumper at 5:33 and the game was deadlocked at 43-43 heading into the final media timeout of the game (5:00).
• Sheppard hit a critical three-point bucket from the left wing with 3:50 on the clock to get PC out to a 48-45 advantage.
• Lauren Sampson managed to create a jump ball on a transition opportunity by St. John's with 1:25 left, helping the Friars maintain a 52-49 edge on the scoreboard.
• Another defensive stand culminating in a defensive board by Crooms led to a Baskerville bucket as the shot clock expired.
• The bucket gave Providence a 54-49 lead with 21-seconds remaining.
• Providence held St. John's scoreless over the final 2:35 of the game, scoring six unanswered points to earn the 56-49 win.
• Providence shot 50-percent from the field in the fourth quarter (7-14), including a 2-4 effort from beyond the arc.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• In her 91st career game, Baskerville became the 35th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone. She hit the mark with 2:41 remaining in the third quarter on a lay-in.
• In addition to hitting the 1,000-point mark, Baskerville recorded her second double-double of the season (and 19th of her career) on a season-high 20 points and 11 boards.
• Baskerville currently owns 1,009 career points and ranks 33rd on the Friars' all-time scoring list.
• Her 11 rebounds vs. the Red Storm pushed her into 17th on Providence's all-time rebounding list with 652 career boards, passing former Friar great and All-BIG EAST First-Team selection Chelsea Marandola '10 (651).
• Crooms finished the day with 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and three blocked shots.
• Crooms moved into 14th place on the Friars' all-time assist list (301), passing Diann Reynolds '88 (299).
• Providence's defense held St. John's to a season-low 26.2-percent from the field (17-65).
