Seton Hall Takes Advantage Of Friars Tough Shooting Day To Earn 62-42 Win

Olivia Olsen recorded her first career double-double on 10 points and 12 boards.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to BIG EAST foe Seton Hall, 62-42, on Jan. 16 at Alumni Hall. Providence dropped to 8-8 on the year (3-4 BIG EAST), while the Pirates improved to 7-7 (2-4 BIG EAST).
 
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars started the game 1-7 from the floor as Seton Hall gained a 7-2 advantage at the first media timeout (4:52).
• Providence was scoreless for a stretch of 6:08 until Mary Baskerville knocked down one of two free throws to make it an 11-3 game.
• The Pirates led by as many as 12 (17-5) with 1:38 left in the frame before Nariah Scott converted a traditional three-point play for Providence (17-8) with 1:24 remaining.
• Providence converted three of its last four shot attempts to finish the opening quarter.
• Seton Hall took a 19-10 lead into the break.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence opened the second quarter with an 8-3 scoring edge to get within four (24-18) at the 5:37 mark.
• A 10-2 run forced a Providence timeout as the Pirates jumped out to a 35-22 lead with 2:24 on the clock.
• The Friars got a traditional three-point play from Olivia Olsen, followed by a lay-up from Audrey Koch to close the quarter and get within single digits at the half (35-27).
• Olsen paced the Friars in the first half with seven points and six rebounds.
• Lauren Park-Lane scored 23 of the Pirates 35 first half points. She shot 9-15 from the floor, while her teammates combined to hit 5-20 attempts.
• Providence held a 26-14 advantage on the glass and 18-12 edge in points in the paint.
• Turnovers proved to be an issue for Providence in the first half, coughing up the ball 15 times compared to Seton Hall's six miscues. SHU posted a 12-4 margin on the scoreboard in points off of turnovers.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Seton Hall used a 7-2 spurt to start the third to match its largest lead of the game (42-29).
• Park-Lane was awarded three free throws after being fouled behind the arc. She drained all three to extend the Pirate's lead to 14 (45-31).
• Providence responded, once again, to get within single digits with a 5-0 run (45-36), but Seton Hall answered with back-to-back buckets to halt the momentum.
• SHU took a 49-38 lead into the final quarter.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Seton Hall started the fourth with eight-straight points to gain a 57-38 lead.
• Providence didn't get on the board until Janai Crooms converted a lay-up with 4:31 left on the clock.
• Seton Hall outscored Providence 13-4 in the fourth for the 20-point win (62-42).
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Olsen recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Seven of her 12 boards came off the offensive glass.
• Crooms was the only other player to reach double figures in the scoring column for PC, with 10. 
• The Friars were held to a season-low three assists. Two of the Friars' three assists were distributed by Olsen.
• Providence shot 25.9-percent from the floor (15-58) and was held without a three-point bucket (0-11). 
• It snapped the Friars streak of 196 games with at least one three pointer. The last time Providence was held without a three dates back to Feb. 22, 2015 vs. DePaul (0-3).
• Park-Lane finished with 30 points to lead the Pirates, while Sidney Cooks (11) and Andra Espinoza-Hunter (11) also reached double figures. 
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will played three-straight games on the road, beginning with a weekend series against Villanova (Jan. 21) and Georgetown (Jan. 23). Providence closes the road swing Omaha, Neb. against Creighton on Jan. 28 and will return to Rhode Island to host Connecticut at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Jan. 30.
