Friars Suffer First Road Loss Of The Season With 71-56 Defeat At Villanova

Providence returns to action against Georgetown on Sunday in Washington, D.C.

VILLANOVA, PA. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to BIG EAST foe Villanova, 71-56, on Jan. 21 at Finneran Pavilion. Providence dropped to 8-9 on the year (3-5 BIG EAST), while the Wildcats improved to 10-6 overall (4-3 BIG EAST).
 
1ST QUARTER
• Villanova started the game on a 7-0 run, but the Friars responded with back-to-back buckets by Emily Archibald and Kylee Sheppard (7-4).
• Providence used a 6-2 run to make it a two-point game at the 3:32 mark (12-10).
• With under two minutes to play, Nova went on a 5-0 spurt to bounce back out to a seven-point advantage (20-13).
• The 'Cats took a 22-14 lead into the break. 
• Maddy Siegrist paced all scorers with nine points for Villanova, while Alyssa Geary and Sheppard netted four points each for Providence.  
 
2ND QUARTER
• The Wildcats opened the second quarter with a 10-0 run through the first 3:12 of the frame to force a Providence timeout and gai a 32-14 lead.
• Sheppard halted the run with the Friars first bucket at the 6:13 mark and Geary followed with a lay-in after back down her defender on the right block (32-18).
• Siegrist ended a scoring drought of just over three minutes with a triple from the right wing as the Wildcats outscored Providence 8-4 to close the second quarter.
• The Friars were scoreless over the final 2:10 of the half and went to the locker room trailing 40-22.
• Points in the paint were even at 14-14, but the Wildcats were +7 behind the arc. Providence was 0-3 from three-point range, while Villanova hit 7-13 attempts (.538).
• Sheppard scored a team-best eight points in the first half for Providence, while Siegrist dropped 17 for 'Nova.
 
3RD QUARTER
• Providence fell behind by 23, but used a 9-2 run to make it a 16-point game with 5:28 on the clock (49-33).
• Villanova halted the Friars' momentum with a 6-0 run to bounce back out to a 20-point lead after the media timeout.
• Providence went without a field goal over the final 5:27 of the quarter, scoring five points from the foul line.
• Villanova took a 59-38 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
4TH QUARTER
• Providence started the fourth with a 10-4 scoring edge to get within 15 with 6:30 to play.
• The Friars got as close as 13 with 2:21 remaining in the game with the help of a 6-0 run.
Nariah Scott scored four of the Friars' six points in the spurt.
• The Wildcats went without a field goal for four and a half minutes before Zanai Jones converted a short jumper with 16 seconds left in the game, making the final score 71-56.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS
• Providence and Villanova split the season series, with each team taking a win on its home court. 
• The Friars defeated the Wildcats 66-47 to open BIG EAST play on Dec. 3 at Alumni Hall.
• Sheppard was the lone Friar to reach double figures in the scoring column (11). 
Mary Baskerville played just five minutes in the first half due to foul trouble and scored all eight of her points in the second half.
Alyssa Geary also scored eight points to go along with a team-best seven rebounds.
Olivia Olsen contributed in seven points and joined Geary with seven boards.
• Siegrist finished the night with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Brianna Herlihy narrowly missed a double-double of her own with nine points and a game-high 11 boards.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
• Providence will remain on the road to face Georgetown at McDonough Arena in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, Jan. 23. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network via FloSports.
