Friars Control Overtime To Defeat Georgetown On The Road, 66-58

Friars earn first victory at McDonough Arena since 1996; Kylee Sheppard paced Providence with 21 points.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Providence College women's basketball team earned a 66-58 victory over Georgetown in overtime on Jan. 23 in Washington, D.C. It marked the Friars' first win at McDonough Arena since 1996, snapping a streak of 16-straight losses on the Hoyas home court. Freshman Kylee Sheppard was played more like a veteran, scoring a game-high 21 points for the Friars.
1ST QUARTER:
• The Hoyas got the first bucket of the afternoon, but Providence answered with a 9-3 run to gain a four-point advantage with 6:01 on the clock.
• A 5-0 spurt helped Georgetown regain the lead (10-9), but the Friars closed the quarter with a 9-3 scoring edge to take an 18-13 lead at the intermission.
2ND QUARTER:
• Georgetown opened the second quarter with a 4-0 spurt to cut the deficit to one (18-17).
• Lauren Sampson got the Friars on the board with back-to-back three pointers at 6:39 and 5:54 to extend the Providence lead to seven (24-17).
• Providence extended its lead to double digits (30-20), forcing a Hoyas timeout.
• Sheppard keyed the effort with back-to-back buckets.
• The Friars defense was strong, holding Georgetown without a field goal in the final 5:16 of the half. The Hoyas managed just two points during that span on a pair of free throws from Milan Bolden-Morris.
• Alyssa Geary scored a team-best nine points in the first half, while Mary Baskerville hauled in a team-high six rebounds.
• Sheppard put up a solid stat line in the first half with eight points, five rebounds and three assists.
• Bolden-Morris paced the Hoyas with 10 points.
3RD QUARTER:
• The two teams traded buckets during the opening five minutes of the third. The Hoyas had a slim 7-6 edge in scoring during that stretch.
• Olivia Olsen was responsible for four of the Friars' six points.
• Providence held a 36-29 lead at the media timeout (4:53).
• The Friars went scoreless the final 4:30 of the quarter, as the Hoyas inched within 38-34.
4TH QUARTER:
• Geary broke into double figures (11), scoring the first bucket of the fourth quarter to give Providence a 40-34 lead.
• Georgetown responded with a 6-0 run to get within 41-40 with 7:37 on the clock.
• The two teams traded buckets down the stretch, until the Friars managed to reel off four-straight points on a Janai Crooms lay-up and a pair of free throws by Sheppard.
• Sheppard's free throws gave the Friars a three-point cushion with 19-seconds to play.
• Following a Georgetown timeout to advance the ball, Kaylin West banked in a deep three to force overtime with three seconds remaining in the game.
OT:
• Bolden-Morris drained a three for Georgetown to open the extra session.
• The Hoyas held a 58-57 lead with 2:15 to play, but Providence closed out the game with a 9-0 run over the last 1:26 to earn the 66-58 victory.
• The Friars outscored the Hoyas 13-2 over the final 3:08 in the overtime.
• Sheppard scored seven of the Friars' 15 points in the overtime session, including a 5-6 performance from the charity stripe in the final 40-seconds.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
